After Oklahoma’s second Saturday off for the season we’re finally back to Friday of game week. That means it’s opponent Q&A time. This week we’re chatting with Bobby La Gesse, of the Ames Tribune, and we’re breaking down the Iowa State Cyclones.

CCM: A few weeks ago Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard basically took an, "Us vs. the Big 12" stance following the Oklahoma State game. Give us the back story there and then your opinion on the situation as a guy who covers the team.

BLG: For the last several years there have been a lot of controversial calls that went against Iowa State in football and men's basketball. Most folks remember the controversial end to the Texas football game last year with the non-fumble fumble that led to Texas winning. There were a few others too.

There have been sour feelings simmering for a while over controversial calls not going Iowa State's way. Part of the athletic department and fan base believe officials are out to get Iowa State, especially in games against bigger name programs. A controversial touchdown happened in an Oklahoma State game that became a blowout. It resulted in Pollard's rant, where he all but came out and said the league is making calls against ISU because it voted against adding an eighth football official about 18 months ago. Pollard implied Big 12 games are fixed. Those are lofty accusations. You need evidence to say that and ISU hasn't provided it.

I get the frustration from the fans. Every fan base can rattle off a series of games where the calls went against them. The thing is everyone can do it. Refs aren't perfect.

Overall, I think it was people reacting poorly to a call that didn't go their way. I really think Pollard could have used the Oklahoma State game as a way to bring up a conversation about officiating and if everything is being done to ensure the correct call is always made. I think that's a conversation most would be interested in having.

CCM: As for the Cyclones themselves, how crazy is it to see a Paul Rhoads coached team struggle this much on defense?

BLG: Typically, ISU has won with a stout defense and a bunch of big scoring plays. The defense has struggled for ISU the last two seasons. The Cyclones are rebuilding on defense with a lot of young players and an undersized defensive line.

There is a lot to like individually with the defense. Senior linebacker Jevohn Miller is a tackling machine. Senior defensive end Cory Morrissey is a league leader in sacks. Sophomore cornerbackerigel Tribune could be a future shutdown corner and both young safeties, T.J. Mutcherson and Kamari Cottton-Moya show promise.

The individual improvements have yet to translate into defensive success.

CCM: Is it one aspect of the defense that struggles more than the other (run/pass) or has it been a struggle all around?

BLG: More often than not it's the rush defense. ISU is ninth in the league in rush defense, allowing 209 yards per game. The pass defense has been more consistent, but did allow Texas to connect on several deep passes in the last game, a 48-45 loss.

CCM: Is it fair to say that the losses have overshadowed ISU's improvement on offense?

BLG: Nationally, probably, but those in the area (or those who were realistic) knew this was a rebuilding year in Ames. The improvement for players like I mentioned above on defense is what fans should have been looking for. Yes, losing to an FCS program for a second straight season, even if it was North Dakota State, isn't good, but most didn't expect ISU to go bowling this season.

CCM: Dual-threat quarterbacks have been an absolute headache for Oklahoma's defense over the last month. Talk about Sam Richardson's game and the threat he poses to the Sooner defense.

BLG: Richardson is playing his best football as a Cyclone. He's set the program record for completions in consecutive games and has thrown for 690 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions during that span.

He looks a lot towards wide receivers Allen Lazard and D'Vario Montgomery and tight end E.J. Bibbs. All three are playmakers that can give the Sooners fits in the passing game.

CCM: Where have you seen the biggest improvements in the offense under new coordinator Mark Mangino?

BLG: It's been in the play of Richardson. He's making better decisions than ever before. He is more accurate than ever before. He is making more plays than ever before.

Richardson is playing like a true quarterback. Before, he would look to scramble before going through his progressions. Now, he only scrambles as a last resort. It's made him a better quarterback and the offense is more productive as a result.

Iowa State's defensive woes could be Oklahoma's best friend on Saturday morning.

The main glaring difference between Iowa State and Oklahoma's previous three opponents is the struggles that the Cyclones have experienced on the defensive side of the ball. ISU is one of the worst defensive teams in the conference whereas TCU, Texas, and Kansas State are all near or at the top.

As Oklahoma's offense prepares to face the Cyclones on the road there will still be challenges that they face but the end result should be extremely different just based on the performance of the ISU defense. Here's what the Sooners should aim to do on the offensive side of the ball.

Run, run, run. The only team in the Big 12 worse than Iowa State against the run is Texas Tech. The Cyclones are giving up an average of 209 and 4.9 yards per carry. Yes, ISU knows that Oklahoma wants to run at them and, yes, they'll prepare for it. That doesn't mean that they'll be successful though. Everyone tries to run on the Cyclones and everyone finds success. Opponents are averaging nearly 43 rushing attempts per game against Iowa State.

Keith Ford is expected to make a return and that should bring an added dimension from the backfield that an already struggling defense has to deal with. Ford is Oklahoma's best back at sliding out and running a passing route which means that the ISU linebackers have to be that much more alert. The more Oklahoma runs the ball the better the play-action pass can work.

Score! I know, I know. That does sound trivial but believe it or not, sometimes the offense plays just for field position. Oklahoma needs to take the approach that every offensive possession could be a scoring drive, and they need to work on long scoring drives that consume the clock. Yup, that running game just became that much more important.

Protect the football. Two pick sixes have cost Oklahoma two games this season. It's going to be cold at kickoff with temperatures expected to be below freezing. This means that the likelihood of a tipped pass rises, as does the difficulty level of simple things like taking a hand-off or handling a pitch. The best way to keep a heavy underdog in a fight is to give them the ball off turnovers. Ball security must be a priority!

The Sooners won't need an overly complicated offensive game plan this weekend but they don't need to dumb it down to the level of the Texas game either. This offense needs to get stronger at the line of scrimmage and Trevor Knight needs to continue developing in several areas of his game. Iowa State is the perfect opportunity for both of those things to happen.

What happens when your best isn't good enough? If you’re the Oklahoma Sooners’ defense it means that you have two losses in the first two games.

If we needed further proof that Oklahoma's game against Texas was an anomaly, that game is the only time this season an opposing offense has produced better than their average against this Sooner defense. The good news is that OU won that game but it only brings out the frustration of knowing that in their two losses this season Oklahoma's defense has done their job.

Sure there are frustrations over big plays that have been allowed by the defense, but even at that opponents are being held to below their averages. Tennessee beat their rushing average against OU and West Virginia went to the air with a bit more success than their averages. Still, those were wins and the bump and yardage was innocent due to the points being below average.

If there was a truly legitimate criticism of the defense it would be the surrender of big plays and not being able to get off the field on third downs. Far too many scoring drives have been boosted by big plays against Oklahoma's defense, with the safeties and linebackers being the guys on the hook for being out of place. Third down is a group effort and as a group the Sooners are ranked 81st nationally in third down defense and that is a significant problem.

We've legitimately made the case against the offense and kicking game for leaving points on the field but there are also instances of the defense not snuffing out scoring drives as well. Be it pressure, scheming, or alignment the defense is just a couple of third down stops from being undefeated this season.

Last Meeting With Sooners: November 16, 2013 (L 48-10)

Things aren't going very well for Iowa State as far as wins and losses go but don't let that trick you into thinking Oklahoma's road trip to Ames this weekend is going to be a cakewalk. In defeat, the Cyclones have posted impressive numbers against Kansas State, Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Texas. The, "Close but no cigar" finishes are going to swing in favor of Paul Rhoads soon, we just hope that it happens the following week against Kansas.

Offense

The Cyclones are at the bottom half of the conference in just about every statistical category, bottoming out with the worst ranked rushing attack, yet somehow Mark Mangino has still had a game plan that gives defenses fits. For the fourth game in a row the Sooners will be playing against a dual-threat quarterback and for the second game in a row the opposing quarterback leads the team in rushing as well. Sam B. Richardson is completing 61% of his passes for an average of 242 yards per game. He's thrown 13 touchdown passes this season and 6 interceptions. In addition, he's averaging 3.7 yards per carry and has two rushing touchdowns.

Tight end E.J. Bibbs has been Richardson's top receiving target this season. The 6-3/264 senior has caught 32 passes for 392 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. Freshman Allen Lazard (6-5/221) leads the team in receiving yards, with 392, and sophomore D'Vario Montgomery is a solid third option with his 11 yards per reception average.

When Richardson isn't running the ball himself he's putting it into the hands of Aaron Wimberly. Also a senior, Wimberly (5-9/177) is averaging 4.1 yards per carry and has a team-high four rushing touchdowns.

The Cyclones are eighth in the conference in scoring (27.4), sixth in passing (246.9 YPG), and tenth in rushing (117.1 YPG).

Defense

If you're looking for the culprit in ISU's five losses this season it's found right here. The Cyclones have been abysmal on defense this season! They are seventh in the conference in pass defense (246.7 YPG) with four touchdowns surrendered through the air to five interceptions. The most notable stat for Iowa State's pass defense is that opposing quarterbacks are completing 63% of their passes which is the highest percentage allowed by any defense in the conference.

The passing stats might be worse for Iowa State if it weren't for the success opponents are having on the ground. The Cyclones are one of just two teams in the conference (T. Tech 246.1) to give up over two hundred rushing yards per game (209).

Linebacker Jevohn Miller leads the team in tackles with 68, and defensive end Corey Morrissey is the team's sack leader with five. Three different Cyclone defenders have recorded interceptions with T.J. Mutcherson and Nigel Tribune tied for the team-high with two each.

The Skinny

The lack of a game-changing running back is what separates Iowa State from Oklahoma's last three opponents. Their inability to make big plays on defense should also be a source of confidence for the Sooners. Even so, OU will still need to contain Richardson, protect the football, and make plays on both sides of the ball for anyone in the Sooner State to feel comfortable about this game.

Trevor Knight Undisclosed Injury

After jumping out to a great start, an untimely event unfolded as Trevor Knight took a shot to the back while diving at the end of a play. The result of the play forced back-up, Cody Thomas into the game until the starter returned for the next drive. Regardless, Knight left the stadium with his non-throwing arm in a sling leading to missed practices during the off week.

During Monday's Big XII Teleconference, head coach Bob Stoops acknowledged the injury a week after refusing to comment on the situation. However, he failed to disclose any information...as usual.

Question: "Bob, why exactly was Trevor out?"

Answer: "I'm not gonna say. Why would I tell you? You're looking at me like that's unusual. He's a quarterback. If everyone knows what's injured on him, then they go target it. Right? You're not a betting guy are you? He's gonna play so don't worry about it."

Keith Ford Expected To Return To Practice

Through the first three games of the season, Ford proved to be the most valuable back on the roster with 194 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Initially, the running back was expected to miss 2-3 weeks due to a foot injury. That time frame quickly expanded to cover six weeks. On Monday, it was announced that Ford will be returning to practice. Assuming he is ready to go this weekend, fans could see a three-man rotation in the backfield once again.

Zack Sanchez Says He's 100%

In a 52-7 thrashing of an in-state opponent, Oklahoma's Zack Sanchez suffered an injury shoulder. The injury continued to plague the cornerback at the onset of conference play. It became clear just how much the star of the secondary was suffering against the physical prowess of WVU's Kevin White.
