For the second time in their last three conference series the Sooners find themselves trying to avoid a sweep going into Sunday. What started off as a promising Saturday afternoon in Lubbock turned into an absolute nightmare for Oklahoma.

OU took a 1-0 lead over Texas Tech in the top of the third when Hector Lorenzana knocked in Kolby Carpenter, and then they doubled it up in the fifth when Carpenter knocked in Hunter Haley. Leading 2-0 going into the bottom half of the fifthOklahoma completely fell apart, as Tech scored ten runs on ten hits in the inning.

With all the win taken out of their sails, OU went three-up-three-down, thanks to a double-play, to start the sixth and then Tech's Tyler Nelsony led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run over the left-center wall. There was no doubt about the outcome of the game, at that point, and everything else was just a formality.

The Sooners plated two more runs in the top of the eighth but you could hardly call it a rally as Tech responded with two more of their own in the bottom half.

The hope was that this series would be a turning point for Oklahoma's season, which has gone south in the last month, but it only added more frustration to a young squad that is now seriously fighting for their post season lives.

Times are thin for Oklahoma baseball. The slumping Sooners had dropped five of their last six conference games going into their series against Texas Tech on Friday night. While they got off to a solid offensive start, for the second Big Twelve game in a row, they watched their lead quickly slip away into a deficit.

Craig Aikin and Taylor Alspaugh both reached base to lead off the game, and they would both work their way around to score thanks to a passed ball and a sacrifice by Mac James, to put OU up 2-0 in the top of the first. However, the Red Raiders would respond quickly by adding four runs in the bottom half to carry a 4-2 lead heading into the second.

Texas Tech would score at least one run in each of the first five innings, to eventually build their 9-5 lead, and then held Oklahoma scoreless through the final five frames.

Tech Starter Ryan Moseley only lasted through the first inning and then gave way to Jonny Drozd who carried the team through the sixth. Oklahoma was able to get to him for nine hits and three runs, but each time the Sooners plated a base runner the Red Raiders would have an answer in the bottom half. Corey Taylor came in to close the game out for Texas Tech and held OU scoreless through his three innings pitched, giving up just one hit.

Oklahoma's hurlers didn't fare as well, with starter Adam Choplick giving up seven runs off seven hits in his three innings of work. He was relieved by Kindle Ladd who gave up the last two runs in his 1.1 innings on the mound. Robert Tasin and Corey Copping combined to hold Tech scoreless through the final 3.2 innings but by then the damage was too severe for OU to recover.

Aikin, Alspaugh, Sheldon Neuse, Kolbey Carpenter and Austin O'Brien were the only players to record a hit for Oklahoma and no one recorded more than one. Tech had five players record multiple hits with Devon Conley leading the way with a 3-for-5 night.

Oklahoma and Texas Tech will play the second game of their series on Saturday with a first pitch set for noon.

Oklahoma is in Lubbock, TX this weekend for a crucial series against the Red Raiders. While the Sooners have been falling in the conference standings, Texas Tech has been on the rise. Currently riding a three-game Big XII winning streak, the Red Raiders are sitting in fourth place at 8-7 with Oklahoma in fifth at 5-7.

The Sooners have lost back-to-back conference series and are in desperate need of a momentum swing to change the course of their season. Standing in their way is a Tech line up that is batting a Big XII fourth best .286 and a pitching staff that has the third best team ERA at 3.19 for the year.

Eric Gutierrez leads the Red Raiders in batting with an average of .329 on the year. He's driven in a team-high 37 RBI and has knock seven home runs this season. Gutierrez is joined by Stephen Smith as the only other Red Raider who is currently hitting above .300 on the year. Smith is currently at .309 and has driven in 13 runs this season.

The Sooners will counter Tech's offense with a change in their pitching rotation. Adam Choplick (3-4, 4.05) will move to the game one starter, with Jacob Evans (3-2, 3.89) taking that start in game two and a big question mark for game three. There's a strong possibility that Ralph Garza, Jr. (5-1, 2.36) would get the start on Sunday, if Coach Hughes opts not to bring him out of the bullpen on Friday or Saturday. Oklahoma's team ERA is 3.47 on the year, placing them just behind Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders are young on the mound but still very strong. They will bookend two freshmen around junior Chris Sadberry (3-1, 2.47), and throw their best arm on Sunday, Dylan Dusek (Fr., 5-0, 2.31), with the hopes of closing out a series win.

Oklahoma's offense has been hot and cold over the last couple of weeks and will certainly need to be spot on this weekend. Led by Mac James, the Sooners are fifth in the Big XII in team batting at .284 this season. James is hitting .371 and has gone yard five times this season. He's joined by freshman Sheldon Neuse at hitting above .300 on the year. Neuse is at .304 and has homered four times. Both James and Neuse are tied for a team-high 33 RBI on the year.

Oklahoma's series against Texas Tech will be broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest, Fox Sports-Central, and Fox Sports-Plus.
