Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Texas Longhorns marked the first time this season that the Sooners wouldn't win a weekend series. After the game Coach Hughes met with the media to discuss what went wrong, the value of a great crowd and a scratch pitching decision for Sunday's finale.

The dominance of the Texas Longhorns over Oklahoma baseball in Norman continued in a big way on Saturday as the Sooners fell 7-2 in the second game, dropping their first weekend series of the season.

Texas struck in the first when Ben Johnson scored on a Tres Barrera ground out to short. The Sooners would tie it up in the bottom of the second Mac James scored off a Kolby Carpenter double-play ball. That would be it for an Oklahoma rally attempt. Instead the Longhorns would plate six more runs through the fourth and fifth innings to take absolute control of the game.

For the second day in a row it was Oklahoma's starting pitching that faltered, giving the Longhorns an early lead. Unlike Friday night, the Sooners didn't have a rally of their own. OU stayed off the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth when Keach Ballard scored on a Sheldon Neuse double.

Adam Choplick gets saddled for the loss after giving up five runs, off seven hits, in the 3.2 innings that he worked. Robert Tasin came out of the pen to go the rest of the way for Oklahoma and threw a respectable 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs off three hits.

On the other side, Dillon Peters went a solid seven full innings in the win. He was on the hook for both of Oklahoma's runs but only gave up 7 hits against the 27 batters he faced. John Curtiss came out of the pen in the eighth to close out the game. He pitched two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.

Texas hasn't lost in Norman since the series finale of 2008 and has won nine consecutive road games in the series now.

The two will play the final game of their series on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm.

Errors, emotion, ejections, deficits and rallies - the opener to the much anticipated three-game baseball series between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns had it all on Friday night.

Texas took advantage of a nightmarish start by Oklahoma pitcher Corey Copping to score six runs in the top of the first. Copping didn't survive the inning on the mound, making his exit with two outs in the inning, and the Longhorns were sitting pretty. However, the Sooners completely erased their deficit in the bottom of the third when they batted in six runs, off five hits, to even the game at 6-6.

The third inning also saw Oklahoma Coach Pete Hughes get ejected when arguing with first base umpire Randy Bruns. It wasn't Bruns call to toss him though, rather it was second base umpire Jeff Henricks who called for the ejection which adds a bit of controversy to the mix.

With Hughes sent to the club house, Assistant Head Coach Mike Anderson took the helm and just about guided the team to the win. Oklahoma took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Sheldon Neuse doubled down the left field line, scoring Hunter Haley on a throwing error, and then came home on a sacrifice by Anthony Hermelyn.

Scoring eight unanswered runs had the Sooners in control of the game and the crown firmly behind them. "You got to be really proud of the kids. Down 6-0 on a Friday night and we battled back," Coach Anderson said. Unfortunately the Longhorns still had some fight left in them though.

Back-to-back doubles by Texas to lead off the seventh brought them to within one run at 8-7 and then a single by Tres Barrera, to the left side, scored Ben Johnson to even the game at 8-8. The top pitching staff in the Big Twelve then took control by holding the Sooners hitless through the final three innings and sending the game into an extra frame.

C.J. Hinojosa led off the 10th with a solo shot home run that put Texas back on top for good. The Longhorns would also plate Madison Carter in the extra frame, on a bases-loaded walk, and carried a 10-8 lead going into the bottom half.

A lead-off walk by Sheldon Neuse gave Oklahoma some hope once again but it quickly faded. Anthony Hermelyn struck out looking, and was ejected after arguing the call, then Niko Buentello and Mac James popped and grounded out to end the game.

Oklahoma is going to look back at this and see it as an opportunity that they let slip past them. They are a young team, but you really can't use that excuse anymore. It is a team that needs to both start and finish strong.

"It's OK to be disappointed right now," Anderson said of his team. "They expected to win!" With an 8-6 lead, going into the seventh, there were a bunch of people expecting a Sooner win. Now, they have two games left over the weekend to turn that expectation into a reality.

When it comes to rivalry games, there's no better way to play them than to have first place on the line. The top spot in the Big Twelve baseball standings are up for grabs this weekend as the Sooners and Longhorns face off in Norman. With an equal .667 winning percentage in conference play, Oklahoma and Texas come into this three-game series having both lost their mid-week game.

Led by Mark Payton's batting average of .361, the Longhorns are seventh in the Big Twelve in team batting with a collective average of .263 for the year. Payton has knocked in 25 RBI on the season and is one of five Longhorns to go yard this season. Ben Johnson (.296) is the only Texas player with more than one homer. That makes his three round-trippers the most on the team and he's tied with Tres Barrera with 17 RBI, which places both of them just behind Payton.

The Texas lineup will face an Oklahoma starting rotation that has been solid this season but not stellar. Corey Copping and Adam Choplick boast winning records but have also had a lot of support from the arms coming out of the bullpen. As a team the Sooners have a collective 3.05 ERA (3rd best in the Big Twelve) and will need to be their absolute best on the mound to give OU an opportunity to come away with a series win.

The strength-on-strength in this series will be the Oklahoma bats vs. the Texas arms. With a team ERA of 2.13. the Longhorns will bring the ultimate test to a Sooners lineup that has struggled to produce runs at times this season. Friday starter Parker French has a sub 2.00 ERA and Texas' Sunday starter Nathan Thornhill is at a Big XII best 0.73 ERA.

The Sooners are second in the conference in team batting. Led by Mac James (.403), Oklahoma has a collective .294 average. James is one of six Sooners to hit a home run this season with five of the six having done it multiple times. Freshman Sheldon Neuse's 27 RBI are the most among the team but Hunter Haley (26) and James (25) are just behind him.

With Big Twelve play nearing the halfway mark on the year, this is a huge weekend series that goes beyond the long established rivalry. Both teams have the opportunity to establish themselves as the lone school atop the conference standings, and both would love nothing more than to do it at the expense of the other.
