The Oklahoma baseball team that took the field in Friday's season opener and the one that left the field on Sunday afternoon were two vastly different groups from behind the plate. Thanks to a four-run first inning the Sooners didn't find themselves in the position of playing from behind, a first for the young season.

Craig Aikin, Hunter Haley, Nicko Buentello and Hector Lorenzana all scored in the first frame as the Sooners batted around the order. Oklahoma then posted multiple runs again in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings on their way to a 15 run/18 hit performance and in one afternoon the Sooners surpassed their total scoring through the first two games of the season.

Sunday's Big XII Baseball Scores

Texas Tech 7 - Indiana 0

The Citadel 2 - West Virginia 10

TCU 0 - Jacksonville 2

Oklahoma 15 - Seton Hall 6

Arizona State 12 - Baylor 1

California 0 - Texas 5

Cal Poly 10 - Kansas State 1

UT Arlington 3 - Oklahoma State 4

Six players in Oklahoma's line up recorded multiple hits on the day, including Junior Mac James who went 4-for-4 from the plate with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. The 18 hits ties West Virginia as the most in the conference, in a single game, through the first weekend of play and the 15 runs in a game are tops in the Big XII.

Seton Hall never really threatened Oklahoma in the game, they scored four runs in the top half of the sixth to pull within 9-5 but the Sooners answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

From the mound freshman Jake Elliott was impressive in picking up a win in his first ever start as a Sooner hurler. He went five full innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three and giving up three runs. His win was preserved by Robert Tasin, Drew Krittenbrink and Ralph Garza Jr coming out of the bullpen.

The Sooners (2-1) are off on Monday but then host Arkansas Pine Bluff on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Both games are set for a 3:00 first pitch.

Saturday was a big day of firsts for the Oklahoma baseball program. Scoring an 8-2 win over Seton Hall for their first win of 2014 is just one of the many premier accolades for the afternoon. It also marked the first win of Coach Hughes tenure as the Oklahoma baseball coach. Freshman Sheldon Neuse recorded his first hit as a Sooner and then his first collegiate home run. Anthony Hermelyn batted cleanup for the first time as a Sooner and then also delivered his first home run as well. The homeruns came back-to-back in the 7th inning which was the first time Oklahoma has accomplished the feat since May 7, 2010 against Oklahoma State.

Saturday's Big XII Baseball Scores

Oklahoma State 3 - Stephen F Austin 1

Texas Tech 10 - Indiana 5

TCU 5 - Jacksonville 0

Arizona State 7 - Baylor 4

California 2 - Texas 1

West Virginia 1 - Deleware 3

The story of the day, though, was freshman Sheldon Neuse who was explosive from the plate. His first career hit as a Sooner came in the fourth when he tripled to left-center field, scoring Taylor Alspaugh. He then went yard in the seventh, scoring Alspaugh and Craig Aikin, to put the game out of reach.

"I saw the guy coming out of the pen and I said, 'hey he likes to go off-speed let's sit on the fastball and react,' Neuse said about his homer. He threw the first pitch fastball and then came back with the off-speed and I though, okay, I know that I can hit both now. I just needed to get it elevated and get at least one run in. What ever happened we wanted to at least get one run in and do our job, then it went up and got out."

In his first appearance of the 2014 season, Adam Choplick gave the Sooners six complete innings. He struck out five Seton Hall batters, gave up four hits and was responsible for just a single run. The Pirates weren't able to get to him until the fourth inning when they recorded their first hit.

"I thought [Choplick] was awesome," Coach Hughes said about his starter. "I thought he threw a lot of strikes and pitched well with runners on base, when he had to. He fielded his position and his fastball was really good."

Junior Taylor Alspaugh continued his hot weekend by going 2-for-5 and scoring two runs and made a great diving catch in right field. He said that the main difference between Friday and Saturday was the team's approach and mentality. "I think a lot of it is also the rhythm of the pregame, and the meal, being around the coaching staff and how everybody just functions together." Alspaugh said. "First game out everybody was tight and didn't even know when to put their jerseys on. Today it was kinda, hey let's go focus on playing baseball and get the results in between the lines and I think that's what we were able to do today."

The Sooners play the final game of their series against Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon. First pitch in the rubber match is set for 1:00 PM.

Jacob Evans gave up 5 runs (3 earned) in 5.1 innings of his debut as a Sooner starter and Oklahoma never led Seton Hall in the opener of the 2014 baseball season.

Evans started the second inning by hitting Sal Annunzziate and Kyle Grimm, the first two batters of the inning, with pitches. The two would eventually work their way around the bases and become the Pirates' first two runs of the game, Seton Hall would strike again for two more runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and the final two in the seventh. The seven runs, off a combined fourteen hits, helped the Pirates to overcome the four errors they committed.

Meanwhile Seton Hall starter Josh Prevost allowed four of Oklahoma's five runs through six innings of work, but held the Sooners at bay until the fourth inning when Sheldon Neuse scored off an Anthony Heremelyn sacrifice. OU would rally in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4 but the Pirates wen't right back to work in the sixth to retake the lead for good. Sophomore Craig Aikin was the only Sooner to record more than one hit (2-5) as the team was held to just six total hits for the afternoon. The Sooners also stranded seven base runners.

Its definitely not the way you'd like to start the season off but Oklahoma will have a shot at redemption on Saturday when they host the Pirates in game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00.

Used primary as a closer in 2013, the Freshman All-American earned nine saves to go along with his seven wins. It'll mark the first time a Sooner hurler has made his debut as a starter on opening day since Zach Neal took the mound in 2010.

Scouting The Enemy - Seton Hall was 37-19 last season but stumbled in the Big East Tournament. Players to keep an eye on include junior first baseman Sal Annunziata hit .319 as a sophomore last season while senior third baseman Chris Selden hit .320 and stole 17 bases. Selden will be moving from the infield to the outfield for the Pirates this season in an effort to replace veteran leadership and experience that left after last year. Opening day starter Josh Prevost is the veteran leader of the Seton Hall pitching staff.

Oklahoma In Season Openers - Since 1962, Oklahoma is 35-17 on opening day and 23-1 when playing the first game of the season at home, including 22-0 at L. Dale Mitchell Park. All-time in home openers, the Sooners are 48-4 going back to 1962, including 32-0 at L. Dale Mitchell. - Oklahoma Sooners Baseball Press Release
