Given how quiet things were surrounding the search, it only makes sense that a name we've never heard mentioned in connection to Oklahoma's final coaching vacancy would wind up getting the job.

That name is former Auburn assistant Jay Boulware who Oklahoma announced as their new tight ends and special teams coach. And we say 'former Auburn assistant' because Boulware is actually coming from Wisconsin, but was only there long enough for about a cup of coffee. He was introduced in Madison on January 11th and now less than two months later has accepted a job in Norman. His time in Madison was so brief in fact that it was omitted entirely from his coaching bio.

Here is the official release from OU and Bob Stoops:

University of Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops announced Friday that Jay Boulware has joined the OU Football staff. He will coach tight ends and will also have special teams duties to be further defined at a later date. Boulware spent the last four seasons at Auburn as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator, where he helped the Tigers to an undefeated 2010 campaign and a victory in the 2011 BCS Championship Game.

"Jay owns an impressive track record as both a coach and recruiter," Stoops said. "He possesses a wide range of coaching experience, competing in some of the nation's toughest conferences. He also has strong ties in the state of Texas, as well as recruiting relationships across the country that will serve us well at the University of Oklahoma. We enthusiastically welcome Jay back to his roots in the Big 12."

Here is a statement from Boulware on joining the Oklahoma staff:

"I have the utmost respect for Coach Stoops and his program at the University of Oklahoma," said Boulware. "To have a chance to join the Oklahoma staff is an unbelievable professional and personal opportunity. I'm looking forward to the start of spring practice and the chance to work with the talented student-athletes and coaches on OU's roster."

Considering this hire came basically out of nowhere, we're still learning about Boulware. The early impression is that he's very well respected for his coaching ability and a solid special teams coach. Oklahoma fans had been clamoring for a dedicated special teams coach for years and while that won't be Boulware's only responsibility, this is as close as OU fans were ever going to get to what they wanted.

He has recruiting ties to the South, but isn't necessarily regarded as a dynamic recruiter (Rivals recruiting profile). Which will probably disappoint a number of Sooners fans, but don't underestimate what that OU logo on your shirt can do for you if you're willing to put in the work.

With Boulware's hire, Oklahoma will now enter spring practices with a complete coaching staff which was something a number of fans were concerned about prior to this news.

So now that the staff is fully intact, how do you feel about the hires that were made? Are you confident that Oklahoma upgraded their coaching staff as a whole? Are you taking a wait-and-see approach to things or are there already things you're disappointed about?

Multiple reports out Friday morning that Mark Mangino will become the new tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, Youngstown State.

And with that, it would appear whatever slim (insert joke here) chance there may have been of Mangino returning to the Oklahoma staff has now been eliminated.

Many OU fans, myself included, were never a fan of the idea that Mangino could be coming back to Norman. While I cannot speak for anyone else, it was never a personal matter as much as it just didn't seem to make sense from Oklahoma's perspective. So it's good see the guy get a second chance somewhere and hopefully it will work out for everyone involved.

Just wanted to throw up a quick update in case some of you hadn't already seen it. Jackie Shipp was officially introduced Tuesday as the newest member of Todd Graham's Arizona State coaching staff. Shipp will coach the defensive line.

In a move that was probably good for all parties, it's nice to see Shipp find a comfortable landing spot after leaving a staff he'd been a member of for 13 years.

We wish him nothing but success at ASU.

As the recent coaching hires begin to fall into place and spring football quickly approaches, Oklahoma still has one more coaching vacancy left to fill. There has been some debate as to whether or not Bob Stoops would go back to the " good ol' buddy" well and bring in a guy like Mark Mangino or Chuck Long to likely handle tight ends and fullbacks.

However, there has also been considerable talk that this hire could have more of a special teams influence. It's unlikely, given Stoops' reputation, that it would be a fully dedicated special teams coach but more someone with that kind of a background who could also handle another position/s as well.

It is also no secret that Oklahoma is looking to get younger as a staff and seeking someone who has a reputation as a dynamic recruiter, preferably with ties to the southeast.

And with all of that in mind, a new name has emerged recently. That name is Derek Lewis (coaching bio), a current member of the Florida Gators coaching staff. (In an effort to give proper credit where it is due, I'm almost positive James Hale was the first one to publicly bring Lewis' name into the mix.)

Lewis seems to fit all the criteria of what Oklahoma would be looking for in a coach and his Rivals recruiting profile (2 five star and 6 four star players in the last two years) speaks for itself. He has obvious ties to the South during his time at Florida, but also is a New Orleans native with strong ties to the state of Louisiana (somewhere OU has recruited in the past) as well. In another little interesting turn of events, Lewis just so happens to be a former University of Texas football player and was involved in one of the more memorable Big 12 Championship Game plays (a 61-yard reception) that helped the Longhorns win their first Big 12 title.

Also in Oklahoma's favor, somewhat similar to the Jerry Montgomery situation, is that Lewis was the lowest paid assistant on Florida's staff last year. So could a bump in pay and/or responsibilities be enough to convince him to make the move to Norman?

The reports surrounding Oklahoma and Jerry Montgomery were coming fast and furious Saturday afternoon. There have been several reports from the Michigan side of things, but now Jake Trotter has confirmed ($) through his sources that Montgomery has indeed accepted OU's offer to replace Jackie Shipp.

While Montgomery has bounced around a bit in his career (coaching bio), the one constant everywhere he has been is improved defensive line play. And a primary reason for that is recruiting prowess and ability to bring in the top level talent. Don't believe me, just check out his Rivals recruiting profile.

With Montgomery now in the fold and Bedenbaugh already hitting the recruiting trail, the Sooners have significantly upgraded their staff from a recruiting perspective.

At this point, it would be nearly impossible to make the argument that Bob Stoops is not committed to returning Oklahoma to a national championship level. Something at least a decent portion of Sooner Nation seemed to be questioning after an embarrassing close to the 2012 season. The changes made and the subsequent hires to replace them give every indication that Stoops recognized the problem and took the necessary steps to correct them.

Oklahoma still has one more coaching position to fill, but there is some question as to the level of urgency on their part to do so. There is some speculation that they are either leaning towards a tight ends/fullbacks coach or someone who could do that but comes from more of a special teams background. Much like the defensive line position, there aren't many names out there at the moment so it's difficult to project which direction they may choose to go.

For now however, the Sooners appear to have landed a young, top notch assistant coach who OU fans should be excited about coming to Norman.

At least one report has surfaced Saturday afternoon that Michigan assistant, Jerry Montgomery, has accepted Okahoma's offer to become their new defensive line coach. Michigan's Scout.com site is reporting that an announcement could come as early as Monday. According to that same report, "Michigan offered a competitive compensation package to Montgomery, but ultimately he felt the opportunity at Oklahoma was clearly one he couldn't pass up."

Adding to the speculation this initial report could be accurate is a tweet that one Michigan player, 2013 five star recruit Ondre Pipkins (anybody else cool with Montgomery bringing a five star defensive tackle or two to Norman?), sent out Saturday as well.

While we are still waiting for those on the Oklahoma side of things to confirm, it would appear as though it's more a matter of when rather than if at this point. Bare in mind, this is just one report and while we're not calling it into question nothing is ever truly official until it can be confirmed by multiple sources and/or it comes from OU.
