Former Pitcher Burch Smith Is One Of Many Former Sooners To Come From Howard College | Tim Heitman - USA Today

Britt Smith has a good thing going! Entering into his tenth season as the skipper of the Howard College Hawks he has coached 15 NJCAA All-Americans. In 2009 Howard College won just their second ever NJCAA national title after pulling of a perfect 54-0 regular season, and a 63-1 overall, record. Over the last four seasons (2009-12) he has guided his team to a 112-16 record in conference play and has won an unprecedented four consecutive conference titles.

"It always seems to make you a better coach when you have really good players in your program," Coach Smith commented, proving that humbleness is another one of his characteristics. While its true that he's enjoyed some outstanding talent during his tenure at Howard, the coaching staff still deserves the credit for recruiting, developing and then sending that talent on to the NCAA's...especially to Oklahoma.

Former Sooners Zach Neal, Tanner Toal and Burch Smith are just a few of the players that Smith has sent to Oklahoma to play baseball. However, his greatest contribution to the OU baseball program will be this spring when five of his former players will take to the field for the very first time in an Oklahoma uniform.

"I think that is the most to one program in a single year but we have sent a bunch of guys to OU in the past," Smith said. "Zach Neal, Anthony Collazo, Tanner Toal, Burch Smith and Tyler Ladendorf signed with OU but was the 60th overall pick in the draft and never attended."

Of the five guys Oklahoma landed, three of them pitched at Howard and two of them played the field and who better to give us a scouting report on them than their former junior college coach. That's exactly what Coach Smith did for us on Thursday afternoon when he took the time to give me the lowdown on all five guys.

Kyle Hayes came to Howard College via San Diego State and Robert Tasin by way of Texarkana College. Both players suffered injuries in 2012 but were able to make contributions to the team, particularly Tasin who posted a 3-1 record and seven saves with a 1.98 ERA.

Kyle Hayes - Photo courtesy of Howard College

"Hayes and Tasin, unfortunately for us, were injured most of the season," Smith said. "However, in the games they were able to play, both were impact performers on the mound for us. They both have above average arm strength with plus movement. Hayes has heavy sink and a plus change up."

Left-handed junior pitcher Ethan Carnes showed some serious potential at Howard College. In 2012 he posted a 6-1 record, as a starter, with a 3.81 ERA. He struck out 61 batters, opposed to 22 walks, in 56.2 innings of work last season.

Ethan Carnes - Photo courtesy Howard College

"Carnes was a rotation starter for us last year and when we played defense behind him he was really effective," Smith told me. "He would pitch 89-92 with good sink and would flash a plus breaking ball at times. He developed a good feel for the change up last year and had the ability to throw it in any count."

In addition to quality arms, the Sooners also picked up some offensive punch from Howard College in the way of outfielder Colt Bickerstaff and Hector Lorenzana. Both could be in the starting lineup this evening with Lorenzana penciled in at shortstop and Bickerstaff battling for the starting right field spot.

"Colt Bickerstaff was an impact bat in our line up and really matured as a hitter in his year at Howard," Smith said. "He developed more plate discipline and his average and power numbers really increased. He has pro power and when his approach is solid at the plate he will be a solid middle of the line-up hitter at any level."

Colt Bickerstaff - Photo courtesy of Howard College

With offense being a bit of a question mark going into this season, both players will be on the field if they can contribute at or near the level that they did at Howard College. Bickerstaff was a .356 hitter with 19 doubles, 7 triples and 5 home runs to his credit.

"Hector Lorenzana was our best offensive player at the end of last season, Coach Smith added. "He showed the ability to hit for average and power. He was a consistent defender that could play multiple infield positions. He is another guy that, when his approach at the plate is good, has the ability to hit for any team in the country."

Hector Lorenzana - Photo courtesy of Howard College

Replacing a team captain isn't ever easy but Lorenzana seems right for the job as he is set to take over the shortstop position left vacant by Caleb Bushyhead's graduation. He hit .380 in high school and then duplicated that same batting average during his two seasons at Howard where he also posted a .404 on base percentage and an impressive .898 fielding average.

Oklahoma hasn't won a conference title in baseball since 1995. Going into the season they are the overwhelming favorites (as voted on by the conference coaches) to win the title in 2013. In order to do so head coach Sunny Galloway is going to have to rely on new talent at multiple key positions while blending them with veteran leadership from other positions. If there were ever five guys who knew how to do that, and accomplish what is needed to win a championship, its the guys from Howard College. Thanks to their time with Coach Britt Smith, winning is all that they know.

Oklahoma enters the 2013 baseball season with possibly the best duo of pitchers that head coach Sunny Galloway has had in his tenure as the Sooners' skipper. Dillon Overton and Jonathan Gray will be heavily relied upon to keep opposing offenses at bay and put the team in position to win.

"I've never had two potential first rounders," Galloway said. "When I came back as associate head coach we had David Purcey, and that was luxury on Friday, but then you really had to turn around and battle. We had Daniel McCutchen, pitching in the big leagues now, as a Friday guy. That was pretty special. I was talking to Zach Neal who was our No. 1 when we went to Omaha in 2010, and I don't remember exactly what round Zach went, but he's special, and he's probably going to pitch in the big leagues someday. He was even raving about how well (Dillon) Overton and Jonathan Gray are throwing the baseball right now."

Lefty Dillon Overton can flat out deal the ball. As a sophomore last season he was named to the Charlottesville All-Regional team after striking out 11 batters in Oklahoma's win over Virginia. He was also named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team. He finished second in the Big 12 in strikeouts last season (126) and finished with a 3.15 ERA off of 122.2 innings of work. In thirteen of his sixteen starts last season he lasted five or more innings and also threw two complete games.

Overton will be the Friday night starter with Jonathan Gray coming in on Saturday. Gray could be the ace on just about every staff in the conference and will attempt to be the knockout portion of Oklahoma's one-two punch of hurlers. He posted a 3.16 ERA and an 8-4 record, striking out 104 batters, in his Big 12 leasing 18 starts in 2012. In his start against South Carolina in the Super Regional he struck out eight batters, allowing no runs off two hits, in just five innings of work.

New to the rotation this season is lefty Billy Waltrip. A JUCO transfer, from Seminole State, Waltrip was an all-conference pitcher last season after recording a 1.60 ERA and striking out 95 batters. He was 7-2 last season and will be a junior at Oklahoma this year.

Stepping into a situation where two guys are returning as aces can be a bit intimidating but Galloway says that Waltrip is handling it fine. He plans to use Overton and Waltrip on Friday and Sunday, with Gray on Saturday, to give Oklahoma a lefty-righty-lefty line up from the mound.

"Waltrip doesn't have to be better than Overton," Galloway said. "He has to be better than TCU and better than Pepperdine, whoever we're playing. He has to be better than their No. 3, and I like our chances with that. I went out one day, probably about a week or two ago, and I said, `Are you nervous?' And he said no. And I said, `You should be. There's a lot of pressure on you. These other two guys have proven it. You still have to prove it.' And he said, `I'm going to be fine, Coach.' So I think he will be."

Other pitchers who will most likely make an appearance on the mound this season are lefties Jake Fisher and Adam Choplick along with right-handers Kindle Ladd and Drew Krittenbrink. Fisher, a senior, made six appearances last year (1.86 ERA) while Coplick sat through a redshirt. He has a massive frame 6-8/261 which only adds to his potential. Ladd made twelve appearances in 2012 and struggled at times. He finished the year with a 5.45 ERA and struck out 27 batters. Krittenbrink made just one start in 2012 in which he tossed 7.2 scoreless innings of work to record a win.

The Sooners will return a ton of experience to the baseball diamond this spring...just not in the outfield. That's not to say that there isn't talent there in the outfield or that that it is a potential weakness. It is to say, however, that there is a bit of a mystery with Oklahoma's outfielders.

There's little question that senior Max White will be used primarily as an outfielder (White is previewed in more detail in our first post). He started 41 games last season in center field and two in left. As a senior, not only is he the most experienced outfielder on the roster, he also the best outfielder. With the infield having a strong mix of youth and experience White will be needed to anchor the field where its mostly just youth.

One of the youngsters that has been turning heads is freshman Craig Aikin who appears to have earned a starting spot in left field. A four-year letterman from Coppell, Texas, Aikin batted .446 during his prep career. He was named as an all-state player in 2011.

Senior Dillon Yeaman will look to capitalize on the opportunity to become a full-time starter in the outfield in 2013. Last year he appeared in five games, with on start, and batted .273 with a homerun and three RBI. He'll have to fend off sophomore Colt Bickerstaff for the right field spot. A transfer from Howard College, Bickerstaff batted .356 with 19 doubles, seven triples and five home runs last season.

The outfield could be a bit of a work in progress early on as head coach Sunny Galloway considers his options. It is realistic that we could see a rotation of players not named Max White until a starting three are settled upon.

The Oklahoma Sooners will enter the 2013 baseball season carrying the #16 national ranking in the USA Today Coaches' Poll and #19 in the Baseball America Top 25 Poll. OU currently has a streak of five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and will be focused on returning to Omaha this summer. Over the next few days we'll be previewing the 2013 Sooners, starting with the infield.

Max White heads a group of seniors in Oklahoma's infield that will be looked upon heavily to be the physical and emotional leaders of the team. A first team all conference selection last season, White is the perfect definition of a utility player. During his first three seasons at OU he has started games in all three outfield positions as well as first, second and third base and let's not forget that he's also started just as a DH.

Last season White was the only member of the baseball team to start all 67 games and he did so at four different positions (41 at CF, 19 at 1B, 4 at 3B and 2 at LF). He had career highs in batting averages (.337) and RBIs (55). Another interesting stat on White is that he led the team with 25 two-out RBI.

Senior Garrett Carey is mostly remembered for his ninth inning walk-off home run against Oklahoma State last season but he has become a staple at third base where he started 60 games last season. A JUCO transfer from McLennan College, Carey batted .209 in his first season as a Sooner, with 24 RBI and two home runs.

Jack Mayfield recorded career highs in batting average (.280) RBI (34) and home runs (3) last season. He was named to the 2012 All-Big 12 Tournament team as well as the Charlottesville All-Regional team. Although last season was his first year not to pitch at OU (after recording a career 2.88 ERA and 5-1 record as a freshman and a sophomore), Mayfield is still listed as an infield player as well as a pitcher.

These three seniors will be at the heart of Oklahoma's 2013 campaign. Obviously they aren't the only players on the field but there effort and leadership will either hold this team together when a game is on the line or let it fall completely apart. White and Mayfield are both four-year starters now and heading into their final season as Sooners. They were freshmen when the team went to Omaha in 2010 and would love for nothing more than to end their Oklahoma careers there as well. In order for that to happen, they are going to need the additional support of the guys that they share the dirt with.

The departure of Hunter Lockwood makes room for junior Dylan Neal to be the full-time catcher. He made 30 appearances last season with 23 starts. Oklahoma will need him to get more consistent with a bat in his hands though. He only hit .153 for the year with 7 RBI. Jake Smith (also a junior) will most likely make some appearances behind the plate as well.

Matt Oberste ended his sophomore year on fire! In the Big 12 Tournament he hit three home runs to earn All-Tournament honors and the followed that up by recording seven hits and driving in six runs during the Charlottesville Regional resulting in him being named the regional MVP. For the season he batted .312 and drove in 22 RBI.

Dusty Dishman played sparingly in 2012 making just 10 appearances, with four starts (2B, SS and RF). A junior transfer last season from Temple College, he recorded just one hit in 13 at bats.

Junior Hector Lorenzana is one of five current players to have transferred to Oklahoma from Howard College. Last season he batted .380 and had a .404 on base percentage.

The Sooners begin their 2013 baseball season next Friday (February 15th) with a four-game home stand against Hofstra.
