Sooner Nation Podcast (11-2-14) | So It's OK To Run The QB Now?

+

The Sooners completely destroyed Iowa State on Saturday which raised more than a few eyebrows. It wasn't the final score of 59-14 that had Oklahoma fans questioning things, rather it was the shift in philosophies that made us wonder. I believe that I can explain why the defense suddenly became more aggressive (and why that's good news for next week) but we'll keep searching for answers on the quarterback run game. We'll also address the Sterling Shepard injury, and possible ramifications of not having him next week, along with the players that get our vote for offensive and defensive players of the game. We've got the Big 12 recap to go over and will explain why you need to cheer for Kansas State to beat TCU on Saturday. That's right, we need the Wildcats to stay unbeaten. I promise that I'll explain. Finally, we'll tell you what we learned about college football this weekend.

(Big 12 Conference) Week 10: Previewing Big 12 Football

Scouting Oklahoma: The 18th-ranked Sooners have a week off to recover for its one-point home loss to Kansas State. Quarterback Trevor Knight declared his injured shoulder to be 100 percent and the offense also might regain the services of sophomore running back Keith Ford. In the Big 12, the Sooners are sixth in total defense and ninth in pass defense. Scouting Iowa State: The Cyclones are seeking their first Big 12 victory this season. Two of their four league losses have come by a total of seven points. Iowa State expects Jarvis West, one of its most explosive offensive players, to be healthy enough to see more playing time. Iowa State quarterback Sam B. Richardson leads the team in rushing and Oklahoma has struggled to contain mobile quarterbacks. This and that: Oklahoma owns a commanding 71-5-2 record all-time versus Iowa State, which includes victories in the last 15 meetings. The Sooners have won 21 straight in Ames. … Iowa State is next to last in the Big 12 in interceptions and sacks. … The Sooners are third in the Big 12 in rushing offense and second in rushing touchdowns.

NewsOK: Q&A with Iowa State assistant Mark Mangino on his return to the Big 12, Paul Rhoads and how football has evolved

+

Q: Have you enjoyed being back in the Big 12 so far this year? A: It's good to be back in the Big 12. I have familiarity with most of the programs and all the towns that house Big 12 schools, so I'm in familiar territory. I like it. I enjoy the competition of the Big 12. Paul (Rhoads) has just been really fantastic to be with and work for every day. I like the kids that we coach. I think they care. They're fun to coach. They're into it. They have a resiliency about them that I really admire. There's a lot of positives. The only negative is we haven't won as many games as we'd like, so we've gotta take care of that end of it.

The 15 least appreciated players in college basketball

+

Isaiah Cousins, G, Oklahoma: Most people immediately think of Jordan Woodard or Buddy Hield when someone brings up the Sooners, but Cousins definitely deserves his place at the table as well. Cousins has good size for a guard at 6-4 and averaged an impressive 11.0 points and 4.2 rebounds last season while shooting 44.1 percent from the field, 40.4 percent from three-point range, and 80.4 percent from the free-throw line.

2014 Game VIII: Iowa State vs Oklahoma Preview

+

The Cyclones took some momentum from the Texas game in to the bye week, and Oklahoma had had an extra week to stew over being Snyder'd by Kansas State in their last outing. Now Oklahoma travels to Ames for the most lopsided series in major college football. That, and other superlatives regarding Bob Stoops and his Oklahoma team will be mentioned ad nauseam this weekend. Stoops has never lost to Iowa State as Oklahoma's head coach (9-0), Mark Mangino was on Stoops' offensive staff from 1999-2001, and Iowa State offensive line coach Brandon Blaney was part of the staff from 1999-2000. Then there are these two ominous stats: 31: Straight games that Oklahoma has won coming off a loss in the regular season under Bob Stoops. 1960: The last time Iowa State beat Oklahoma in Ames. Paul Rhoads wouldn't be born for another 6 1/2 years.

Updated Big 12 football projections after 9 weeks

+

While some races got flipped on their ear a bit last week -- the SEC West, ACC Coastal, etc., saw some pretty strong moves in terms of projected wins -- the Big 12 held incredibly steady. But while our dream of some five-way tie in the SEC West or a seven-way tie in the ACC Coastal are on life support ... we really could end up seeing five Big 12 teams tied at 7-2 at the end of the regular season.
