Oklahoma Sooners Football: Tennessee game cancelled after SEC adopts conference-only schedule

Oklahoma won’t play Tennessee in Norman in 2020, and we now await word from the Big 12 on its own scheduling decisions.

The Oklahoma Sooners’ Sept. 12 home matchup against the Tennessee Volunteers is officially off the table following an announcement from the SEC to play a 10-game, conference-only schedule this fall.

Coming into Thursday, OU was one of only a handful of teams in the FBS to have its regular season slate unaffected by COVID-19 prevention measures, but it was only a matter of time before things shook up in Norman as well.

So what now? One of the top proposals that’s been presented for the Big 12 recently is a 9-game conference-only slate plus one non-league contest. As of this Thursday afternoon, both Missouri State (Aug. 29) and Army (Sept. 26) remain on the schedule, although the likelihood of either of those games remaining diminishes by the minute.

In other news, the virtual Big 12 Media Days event has also been cancelled, but we’re perfectly fine with it. That sounded terrible.
