Oklahoma Sooners Football Recruiting: 2021 ATH Billy Bowman commits to Oklahoma

Bowman decommitted from Texas, leading to a chain reaction of Longhorn decommitments.

The Oklahoma Sooners are once again getting another top player from the state of Texas, this time at the expense of the Texas Longhorns.

Billy Bowman, the product from Denton, Texas, officially made the switch from Longhorn to Sooner. In addition to joining Lincoln Riley and Alex Grinch, Bowman has added intrigue in joining his girlfriend, Jayda Coleman, a consensus No. 1 prospect for the 2020 class an a utility infielder for Patty Gasso’s squad. Before officially flipping to Oklahoma, Bowman had offers from Georgia, LSU, Alabama, USC, Florida, and several others.

Many of Bowman’s highlights are at wide receiver, standing at 5’10 and 175lbs— but Lincoln Riley and Alex Grinch view the talented Denton prospect as a sure playmaking addition to either side of the ball. He has a high IQ, long arms, great speed and the ability to play inside and outside receiver as well as several spots in the defensive secondary. My inclination would be that he’s worked first on defense at cornerback for Alex Grinch and Roy Manning, but also has very high upside as a receiver for Dennis Simmons and Cale Gundy to work with.

Bowman is Oklahoma’s 15th commit for the 2021 recruiting cycle and the first true athlete of the class since the Sooners’ staff and Caleb Johnson mutually parted ways. According to 247Sports Composite Rankings, Bowman is the No. 3 Athlete, No. 6 overall player from Texas, and No. 33 overall player nationally. He’s an elite player that is a difference maker on either side of the ball and is also a potential needle mover for an Oklahoma secondary that has been much maligned over the last ten seasons. With the most recent addition, the Sooners remain atop the Big 12 for the 2021 recruiting class, and No. 12 nationally. Again, the Riley and Grinch are not looking for talent that can play on Saturday, they are looking for talent that plays on Sundays. That is who they are getting in Billy Bowman.
