According to a tweet from the Oklahoma Sooners basketball program’s account, the NCAA has granted transfer guard Umoja Gibson a waiver for immediate eligibility. The Waco, Texas native averaged 14.5 PPG while sinking 86 three-points last season as a sophomore for a good North Texas team. He actually faced OU as a member of the Mean Green this past December, scoring 21 points on 8-17 shooting (3-9 from three) in a narrow loss to the Sooners.

Make no mistake — the 6’1” Gibson is not known for his defense or abilities as a distributor. However, he’s the brand of pure scorer and offensive alpha who should be able to take a substantial load off of the shoulders of Austin Reaves, who would often try to force things on the offensive end in 2019-20.
Where he fits in the lineup is yet to be determined, as proficient perimeter defender Alondes Williams still might be the favorite to start at the 2 spot. However, he’s someone who will likely provide something in the neighborhood of 30 minutes per game whether he’s a starter on not. Needless to say, this ruling — while expected — was exceedingly crucial for the upcoming campaign.
