Justin Harrington took visits to NC State and Oklahoma State and found that he was most suited for SpeedD and what the Oklahoma Sooners were doing in this new defense. Harrington signed his LOI and has chosen to play for Lincoln Riley, Alex Grinch and the Sooners. This signing is perhaps Grinch’s favorite signing of the 2020 recruiting class.
Harrington is the top JUCO Safety and the No. 6 overall JUCO prospect for the 2020 class. He is 6’3, 215 lbs. with decent speed and is the exact frame that Alex Grinch wants to mold for his defense moving forward. In my opinion, Harrington is the perfect Nickel for the 4-2-5 defense — he can stay on the field in both passing downs as well as run support. He can match up well with large tight ends as well as come off the edge in ways that allow the Sooners to disguise their defensive attacks more often than not.
Harrington is stepping into a position where his services are immediately needed. Alex Grinch wants long, rangy athletes for his defensive backs and players such as Pat Fields, Delarrin Turner-Yell, and Brendan Radley-Hiles don’t fit that description. Alex Grinch also made it very clear that he needed more quality depth and experience in his group of safeties, saying it was alarming when he arrived at Oklahoma that there were not 22 players that could play at a high level consistently on the depth chart. I expect Harrington to contribute early and often.
Harrington was one of two sets of eyes entering the day, with the other being Kendall Dennis. However, Riley dropped another set just before this news broke, so stay tuned...
