Hate to say I told you so, but I'll do it anyways.

At the beginning of the year, I wrote a post saying there were serious reasons to be optimistic about the defense being good again as soon as this year. After all, the defense is laden with 4 and 5 star talent. How could they not at least be respectable with decent coaching?

Here we are..After 11 games, the Sooners are officially atop the big 12 in total defense and pass defense. https://static.big12sports.com/custompages/pdfs/football/2019OverallStats.pdf.

They are also 31st in the nation in total defense- a MONUMENTAL leap from a year ago. Have they been perfect? No way. They've been gashed on the ground at times, particularly with edge plays that exploit over pursuit of the DL and LBs. But they've been able to get stops when the teams needs them. They've even shown stretches of dominance the likes of which we haven't seen since the early 2000s.

There is still a lot of room to improve. The secondary needs work. The DL and LB's need to be more consistent. But overall this is still a pretty young defense that should be even better next year and is already pretty solid. Lots of young guys are seeing the field regularly, and Grinch will bring in more of his guys with each passing year. The future is bright for the OU defense for the first time in many, many years.

Now let's see if the offense can stop turning the ball over!
