Oklahoma Sooners Football: Report - Oklahoma quarterback Austin Kendall will enter the transfer portal

The future of the quarterback position with the Oklahoma Sooners has been an especially hot topic this week, but that ramps up even more with the revelation that Austin Kendall is entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.

According to a report from the Tulsa World, Kendall has taken the first step to exploring his options. This doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s leaving, but when a player enters the Transfer Portal, other programs are allowed to contact the player and enquire about a potential move.

It’s also worth noting that Kendall, who has been with the program for three seasons, will be eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer in the event that he chooses to pursue another opportunity. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

With Oklahoma bringing in five-star QB Spencer Rattler, having a promising QB in Tanner Mordecai and also being a potential destination for Alabama QB Jalen Hurts, there’s a chance that Kendall’s beginning to see the writing on the wall here (or is at least looking for a back-up plan).

Kendall, who redshirted in 2017, has made eight combined appearances for the Sooners in 2016 and 2018, completing 28 of his 39 attempts for 265 yards and three touchdowns. On Sept. 29, he made his first career start and played the opening series against Baylor. Although he does have experience in the system, the former four-star recruit lacks the scrambling ability, athleticism and general upside of the other potential options — Rattler and Mordecai.
