Well, that didn’t last long...
The Oklahoma Sooners received a verbal commitment from Jay Hayes just over a week ago, but the Notre Dame grad transfer DE has already changed his mind. On Wednesday, Hayes announced his intention to instead play for the Georgia Bulldogs.
This is it! In a month I’ll be heading down to Athens to play for the Georgia Bulldogs. Go DAWGS! ⚫️ ⛓— Jay Hayes (@JayHayesNY) April 25, 2018
Hayes, who started all 13 games at strong-side DE for Notre Dame in 2017, would’ve provided the Oklahoma defensive line with some quality depth at the very least. This does, however, potentially reopen the door (not that it was necessarily shut for anyone in particular) for some of the younger guys to gain valuable experience in 2018.
Hayes would’ve likely played either DE or the 3-4 DT in Oklahoma’s defense, but OU’s depth situation still looks okay along the defensive line. Having said that, he would’ve been quite valuable against the run in 2018. Anyway, this stings a bit. It’s obviously normal for recruits to decommit, but that’s obviously a much less common occurrence with grad transfers (since guys in that age group tend to be a bit more decisive than 17-year-olds).
