The Oklahoma Sooners received seven different commitments between Friday and Monday, five of which came from 2019 prospects. Things became exciting once again when Lincoln Riley posted not one, but TWO eye emojis on Twitter Tuesday evening, indicating two additions. The first of those commitments came on Wednesday evening when San Bernardino (CA) Cajon linebacker Jonathan Perkins announced his future plans.
The former UCLA commitment is listed as a four-star prospect and the No. 18 outside linebacker in the 247Composite Rankings, and his commitment brings OU back to the top spot in those rankings. In total, OU currently has 10 commitments in the class, with five on each side of the ball.
Perkins is Oklahoma’s first 2019 commitment at the linebacker position, and he’s one who should generate plenty of excitement. He’s a take-no-prisoners type of defender who has the potential to be a serious contributor as both a run stuffer and a pass rusher. In addition to his ability to bring the pain, he projects as a decent coverage linebacker who can be utilized in a number of different ways at the next level.
The future of Oklahoma’s 2019 class has looked good for quite some time, but it was often skewed towards the offensive side of the ball. With the recent Perkins development, the recommitment of defensive tackle Derek Green and the commitments of four-star safeties Jamal Morris and Jarrian Jones, things are looking up on the defensive side, as well.
Don’t forget that there’s still an eye-emoji announcement unaccounted for, so... keep your eyes open.
