Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley has developed quite a reputation for his work with quarterbacks over the years, and he will now have a chance to mentor the top-ranked QB in the 2019 class — Spencer Rattler.

Rattler committed to the Sooners in the summer of 2017 following his sophomore year at Phoenix’s Pinnacle High School. Since then, OU has fended off plenty of suitors, including Georgia. Now that he’s officially on board, one has to wonder how quickly he can reach the field as Oklahoma’s starting QB.

Austin Kendall has been in the program for three years and is more that familiar with the offense at this point. Meanwhile, Tanner Mordecai will have a redshirt year under his belt and certainly has the potential run Lincoln Riley’s offense quite capably. So can Rattler potentially beat both of them out in 2019 without even having a spring under his belt? He definitely has the physical tools to do it, but it’s far from a given.

Having said that, there’s no doubt that this dude will be a star for Riley if when he gets his chance. The guy just has elite arm talent, possessing one of the quickest releases you’ll see from a young QB. He also possesses the pocket presence and mobility Riley loves to see from his QBs, although he’s far from a finished product.

Rattler is joined in this class by a five-star WR in Theo Wease, another elite receiver prospect in Trejan Bridges and a giant TE target in Austin Stogner, not to mention a promising young back by the name of Marcus Major. Once he takes the reins, he’s going to have one hell of a supporting cast.
