Oklahoma’s quest for its eighth national title in school history will have to wait at least another year. The Sooners came up just short in double-overtime after Austin Seibert’s 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked and set up a game winning touchdown run by Georgia’s Sony Michel. Even Baker Mayfield’s 287 passing yards and Rodney Anderson’s 201 yard performance on the ground weren’t enough to will the Sooners to victory as OU fell by a final score of 54-48.
The Sooners got off to a hot start and led by as many as 17 points in the first half. The first crack in the armor came at the end of the second quarter when a botched squib kick by Seibert set up a 55-yard field goal by Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship. The Sooners would not score again for over 26 minutes of game time.
The biggest play of the game for OU came with just under seven minutes remaining in the game when Caleb Kelly forced a fumble that Steven Parker recovered and returned 46 yards for a touchdown.
The loss means that OU’s season is over and with it one of the greatest college football careers of all time ends as well. Baker, on behalf of all of Sooner Nation, we’ll miss you.
Thank you Sooner Nation. Thank you for giving me never ending support. I hope you know I gave it everything I had. It has been and unbelievable ride and I'm so glad we enjoyed it together. I love y'all. God Bless and Boomer. -Bake
