NCAA Football: Big 12 Media Days Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Happy game day, Sooner Nation! I know what you’re thinking — this guy still writes for this site?

Yep, I do. But recently in my spare time, I found myself pretty busy procuring and starting out a brand new grown-up job, because the last one I had got outsourced few months ago. I know this may throw off some readers who thought the guys at this little operation are high-rolling sports bloggers (no one thinks that).

Now that I’ve settled in to my day gig and this eventful offseason is finally behind us, let’s discuss some football, shall we? Head down to the comments section for the game thread, where Austin, Sam and others will be asking questions, making predictions and discussing the day’s action with y’all.

Week 1 College Football Viewing Guide (plus Jack’s gambling picks)

Here’s to you, Coach Stoops!

On September 2nd in the magical year of 2000, the Oklahoma Sooners took on the Texas El-Paso Miners on a very, very hot day in Norman. Josh Heupel and company hung more than half-a-hundred on UTEP to kick off the Honorable Bob Stoops’ second season at Oklahoma. That season would go on to end with…you know what’s up.

In case anyone out there needs a reminder, the date this Saturday is also September 2nd, and the Sooners take on UTEP with a dashing young head coach at the helm. I think you can all agree, the writing is on the wall. This one’s for you, Coach Stoops!

Bulletin Board Bonanza

  • Lee Corso on ESPN recently called Lincoln Riley’s inaugural squad “pretenders” and picked the Sooners to be the top 10 team to disappoint this season. I can only say one thing — thank you for your blessings, Coach.
  • Name another team in recent history which returns a record-setting quarterback who finished in the top 4 in Heisman Trophy voting the last two seasons along with his entire offensive line — now deeper than ever and led by an All-American left tackle — that isn’t ranked in the preseason top 5. How about if this team landed its’ best recruiting class in years and features quality depth at almost every position? I’ll wait…

As if Mr. Mayfield needed any more motivation.

  • Ladies and gentlemen, Joey Galloway.

Oh, and can anyone explain to me what TF a ‘Joey Galloway’ is, anyway?

Other games I’m looking forward to this weekend

No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 3 Florida State

This is likely a preview of a playoff game or possibly even the national championship. If the Seminoles are to come away with a win, they’ll have to have improved defending dual-threat quarterbacks. Just last season Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson and Mitch Trubisky had their way with Jimbo Fisher’s defense. Is sophomore Jalen Hurts next up?

Yes. Great minds, Jack — Tide 31, ‘Noles 21

No. 11 Michigan vs. No. 17 Florida

Wait, am I excited about this one? And isn’t it also at the same time as the OU game?

Wolverines win, Gators lose. Next!

No. 22 West Virginia vs. No. 21 Virginia Tech

Florida transfer Will Grier leads Dana Holgorsen’s Mountaineers into the nation’s capitol (or close to the nation’s capital) to face off against former Sooner quarterback Justin Fuente’s Hokies in the Battle for the Black Diamond Trophy. This should be a competitive matchup. WVU rides their new signal caller to a close win.

Mountaineers 35, Hokies 31

Maryland @ No. 23 Texas

Go Terps!

Terrapins 69, Shorthorns 0

No. 7 Oklahoma vs. UTEP

As long as the Sooners start strong and stay upright, I’ll be happy just watching college football this weekend. Here’s to Saturdays in the fall.

Have a safe and happy kickoff to the 2017 season, Sooner friends and family!
