Can you feel it?

Can you feel it? I have a feeling that all of Sooner Nation does. It started towards the end of July as a murmur... just a whisper of a promise. As we progress into August, the feeling begins to overcome us...the excitement builds, the pre-season articles spin all over interwebs, the Twitter-verse discussions increase, until it becomes palpable. This is why we are fans. It is something you can almost - almost - smell, taste, and consume. It is this excitement, this anticipation, the one date circled, the pre-beginning of the upcoming college football season in Norman.

The dreams of what could happen, the anticipation of what we'll see on the field, the expectations of a Sooner Nation that is 17 years removed from the last National Championship - all about to explode as we near that first kick-off. We Sooner fans are lucky...lucky to have the legacy, prestige, and championships that make it possible to BELIEVE that this year WILL BE the year. Gratefully, every year we can honestly ask: Why not OU?

Going into this season, we have many reasons to imagine great things for OUr team.

  • The Sooners' past success with JUCO and graduate transfers points to a season that can be impactful with the likes of Jeff Badet, Marquise Brown, Tylon Lynch and Marcelias Sutton. One of more of these experienced players has the ability to make their mark.
  • Is this the year that Abdul Adams gets his time in the spotlight? Or will Trey Sermon or Kennedy Brooks become big-time phenoms given the chance to see action behind this outstanding O-line? Who of the wide receivers will be the standout? Will a single dominant receiver replace Westbrook, or will we see two or three or four different receivers with multiple catches every game?
  • Speaking of offensive lines...this could be the most dominant group we've had since 2008. They have the potential to get any running back into record high territory this season.
  • Lincoln Riley appears to be comfortable in his new role as head coach, reflected in the players' comments and the assistant coaches' clear excitement during fall camp. What new wrinkles does Riley have for his offense? How can he get Kyler Murray on the field? How much of his playbook haven't we seen? And how much has he added to get young talent on the field?
  • And how does the head coaching change affect Mike Stoops? Is this his renaissance year with a return to a 4-3 configuration to maximize the talent up front?
  • Finally, with Baker Mayfield leading the offense, he's spoken that he isn't resting on his laurels. He has more to prove, and has the ability and teammates to realize the goals he has set. Every step of his journey has been doubted, and he has proven his doubters outside of Norman wrong every time.

Only a few weeks remain until we get to experience those crisp Fall mornings, start preparations for the tailgate, warm up those back yard grills, planning those watch parties, and watching those eBay ticket prices go up as the Sooners' potential continues to swim in the collective minds of the fan base. Can you feel it? The excitement is here, and the college football season is coming. Boomer Sooner!!
