After the University of Oklahoma’s 2017 tailgating map was released on Tuesday, many of us were a bit upset. Luckily, OU responded to the collective outrage from Oklahoma Sooners fans and released a new map that allows tailgating to the west on Lindsey Street.
Below are maps from Tuesday and Wednesday. For a better perspective (and perhaps a more screen-friendly view) check out this tweet from Brooke Pryor of The Oklahoman. It contains four maps going back to 2016.
OU released the following statement on Wednesday:
OU President David Boren has ordered university officials to reevaluate the impact of any changes on permitted tailgate locations to make sure tailgating remains as convenient as possible for OU fans on game day. New permitted areas have been added.
"The university recognizes that tailgating is an important part of the game day experience for many fans," Boren said. "Our goal is to maintain the security of our students in campus housing while accommodating fans as much as possible."
For those who have previously been tailgating along Lindsey Street, the tailgating area has been moved one block west to the area in front of Cate Center, which is now office and classroom space. In addition to the area on Lindsey Street that has now been made available, please review the final updated map online to view additional areas that are open to accommodate the fan experience. Available areas are shaded green on the map.
Those who have specific questions about locations should contact (405) 325-3100 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Well, there you go! I’m glad President Boren and the University paid attention to the concerned masses (or donors) yesterday, but tailgating shouldn’t have been limited to that extent in the first place. In the end, however, the people spoke and OU listened. This isn’t quite as much designated space as I’d like to see, but this is a hell of a lot better than the alternative. Boomer Sooner, and tailgate like a champion on Saturday!
