Don’t look now, but we only have 30 days left in our countdown to kickoff. That’s right, we are now officially less than a month away from Oklahoma vs. UTEP in Norman on September 2. The Sooners tallied 30 rushing touchdowns last season, including this one 40-yard end-around from wide receiver Jarvis Baxter.
That was Baxter’s lone collegiate touchdown, but boy was it a doozie. Of the other 29 touchdowns, 12 came from Samaje Perine, 10 from Joe Mixon, 6 from Baker Mayfield and 1 from Devin Montgomery. The longest rushing touchdown of the season was Mixon’s 79-yard score against Oklahoma State.
Maybe the most surprising stat regarding OU’s 30 rushing TDs is the fact that only two of them came in the wild 66-59 shootout against Texas Tech. Perine was injured that game, and Mixon found the end-zone twice on 31 carries for 263 yards.
Unfortunately for the Sooners, 23 of last year’s 30 rushing touchdowns were scored by players who are not returning this season. OU never struggled to find good skill position players under Bob Stoops, and I imagine that trend will continue under Lincoln Riley.
