After transferring from Pittsburg State following his freshman season, redshirt senior fullback Jaxon Uhles has put forth the effort in Norman without much glory. On Friday, Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley rewarded him with a scholarship, and the team was more than pleased about it. Hard work pays off!
We see videos like this every fall, but we should never cease to appreciate them. It’s always great to see the team embracing someone who did not come in with the hype of the scholarship guys. Also, college is incredibly expensive, so a large burden has been lifted off of his (and possibly his family’s) shoulders.
The Norman native appeared in 12 games in 2015 (all on special teams) and earned First Team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2016. Uhles is known primary as being a very good friend to star quarterback Baker Mayfield (as was documented in this 2015 article from The Oklahoman), and the two have often been seen together since each transferred to OU in 2014. Also of note is the fact that Uhles’s uncle, Ric Uhles, was a member of Oklahoma’s 1985 national championship team.
It remains to be seen if Uhles will see the field again during his final fall in Norman, but regardless of whether he contributes to the team in games or just in practices, he’ll do so on scholarship.
