Former Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Dede Westbrook made his NFL preseason debut on Thursday evening, recording his first NFL catch in the third quarter of Jacksonville’s preseason game against the New England Patriots. Westbrook definitely made it count by beating his man deep for a 42-yard touchdown.
Granted, the coverage was absolutely horrific, and Dede likely won’t have many big-play opportunities quite like this during the regular season. Pats CB Cyrus Jones also gave up a 97-yard TD earlier in the game, so he has to be feeling pretty bad about himself right about now.
However, Westbrook definitely showed off some legitimate NFL speed on this one. Gray was caught looking at QB Brandon Allen for just a moment too long, and Dede was GONE. Even if the safety had not fallen asleep on this one, I don’t think there’s any way that he would have made it over in time to make a play on the ball.
This ended up being Westbrook’s only catch of the game, but no Jacksonville receiver recorded more than two catches on the night. Additionally, Westbrook wasn’t targeted on any other throws, so he definitely didn’t do anything to hurt himself.
The Jaguars won by a score of 31-24, so Westbrook’s TD ultimately proved to be the winner.
