The Oklahoma Sooners (34-22) fell to the TCU Horned Frogs (40-15) by a score of 9-4 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The loss eliminated Oklahoma from the 2017 Big 12 Baseball Championship.
Sooner ace Jake Irvin did not have an ideal outing, allowing four runs on six hits through 5.1 innings and earning his second loss of the season. Relievers Connor Berry, JB Olson and Dylan Grove didn’t fare much better, allowing five runs through 2.2 combined. TCU starter Jared Janczak improved to 8-0 while allowing no runs through 5.0 innings.
TCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd on three hits and three walks. It was a rough frame for Irvin, who walked a hitter with the bases loaded for the inning’s third run. Fortunately, he was able to escape the inning with a 3-2-3 GDP. TCU then added another run on a Connor Berry wild pitch in the bottom of the 6th, and they would add three more on three hits and an error on the bottom of the 7th. After three walks in the bottom of the 8th, TCU added two more runs on a Warner single to left.
The Sooners began to mount their comeback attempt in the top of the 9th when Blake Brewster doubled to right to lead things off. Two walks later, Kyle Mendenhall and Brandon Zaragoza each singled to make it 9-3. Two at-bats later, Tyler Hughes drew a one-out walk to make it 9-4. Unfortunately, two quick outs ended Big 12 Championship play for the good guys.
Oklahoma will more than likely have its name called during Monday’s NCAA Selection Show, but Oklahoma’s chances of hosting a regional were dashed this week.
