Oklahoma City (Putnam City HS) defensive end Ron Tatum has committed to the Texas Longhorns, spurning the Oklahoma Sooners in the process.

The talented local product (No. 122 overall, No. 4 in Oklahoma per 247 Composite rankings) was long considered an OU lean, but he now joins a long list recent recruiting misses for Bob Stoops and his staff. Wednesday’s announcement stings for Oklahoma fans, who were in desperate need of some good news today. New Texas head coach Tom Herman is already handing Ls to the Sooners on the recruiting trail, which is pretty unsettling for those whose allegiances lie north of the Red River.

This, however, is a blow to more than just pride. The Sooners appear to be missing out on an a incredible talent in Tatum. At roughly 6-4 and 270 pounds, he has the potential to make a major impact right out of the gate. He’s big and strong enough to put his hand in the dirt and stop the run, but also he’s quick enough to be a dominant edge rusher.
