Oklahoma Sooners Football Recruiting: RB Asa Martin Will Visit OU This Weekend

The four-star back from Alabama could potentially receive an offer this weekend.

Oklahoma likely won’t take more than two backs in the 2018 class, but early on it looks like the group won’t be short on quality. T.J. Pledger of IMG Academy seems to be a pretty strong OU lean, and the Sooners are also a potential candidate for talented Texas back Keaontay Ingram. However, it’s always good to have some options, and Decatur, Ala., back Asa Martin is certainly a good one.

According to the Football Brainiacs, Martin does not yet hold an OU offer. Hopefully for him that will change after this weekend’s visit. Standing at 6-0 and weighing about 195, he’s not someone who’s going for physically overpower defensive backs (and sometimes linebackers) like Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, or hopefully Trey Sermon and Rodney Anderson. However, he’s certainly not afraid to initiate contact. Martin also has some impressive cutting ability and seems to do a decent job as a pass blocker. Check out the highlights from his junior season at IMG Academy. Keep in mind that this is against quality competition, as IMG usually has a pretty tough slate of games against teams from all over.

Even if the Sooners do offer, they’ll have some stiff competition to land him in the form of Florida, Auburn and other SEC programs. It would be an impressive feat to pull him out of SEC country, and he would be the second guy in as many classes to spurn the local Southern schools to play in Norman (the other being Sermon, of course). If he’s coming to Norman for a visit on his own dime, there’s obviously a little bit of interest there. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing if anything materializes.
