Behind the arm of freshman righty Nathan Wiles in his first career start, the Oklahoma Sooners held off Georgia State for a 5-4 victory in Decatur, Ga. on Wednesday afternoon.
Wiles struck out 7 batters and walked just one in 6 innings Wednesday, giving up three hits and no runs. It’s the sort of performance that will land him squarely in the mix for midweek starts for the rest of the season.
The four Panther runs came in the 7th and 8th innings off Connor Berry and (technically) Vicenzo Aiello. J.B. Olson entered the game in the 8th, allowing two inherited runners to score before securing a 5-out save to seal the victory.
Senior Renae Martinez played the hero when he roped a two-run double to right-center on a two-out, 0-2 pitch in the 8th inning. The runs proved just enough to outlast the Panthers.

Ben Hollas went 2-4 with a run and an RBI during the game.
The win moves Oklahoma to 18-3 after a Tuesday night loss to Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Sooners stay in Georgia for a three-game weekend series against Kennesaw State starting on Friday at 5 p.m. on ESPN3. The series marks OU’s last before the beginning of conference play.
