OU is now 3-0 against ranked opponents on the road

NCAA Basketball: Oklahoma at Texas Christian Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

If anybody thought that Trae Young’s non-conference success would not carry over into Big 12 play, they were sorely mistaken. The freshman phenom went off for 39 points and 14 assists in the Oklahoma Sooners’ 90-89 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth. Young’s outstanding all-around performance was capped off by a pair of game winning free throws with eight seconds remaining to give the Sooners a one-point lead. His performance turned some heads.

Oklahoma got out to a 11-0 lead to open the game, but trailed by as many as 12 in the second half. Down double-digits with less than ten minutes remaining, OU needed somebody besides Young to step up and contribute on offense. Sophomore Kameron McGusty answered the bell. McGusty chipped in 22 points off the bench and shot 3-4 from beyond the arc, including a go-ahead three with 26 seconds left to put his team up 88-87.

Brady Manek grabbed 13 rebounds and Christian James added 10 points in the win. OU’s big man duo of Khadeem Lattin and Jamuni McNeace combined for 9 blocks.

OU’s Big 12 home opener is January 3 at 8pm against some team from Stillwater.
