The 14th ranked offensive tackle in the class of 2018 has officially put pen to paper and signed his Letter of Intent with the Oklahoma Sooners. At 6’7” 336 pounds, Darrell Simpson is a nightmare matchup for any defensive lineman. He announced his commitment to OU back in August.
How He Fits In
It’s not a secret that Oklahoma’s offensive line has been among the best in the country for several years now. Orlando Brown’s likely departure for the NFL Draft after this season means there will probably be a position battle to fill his spot at left tackle next season. OU’s depth at offensive line means Simpson will have to battle with fellow 2018 signee Brey Walker, 2017 signee Adrian Ealy and other, more experienced players for potential playing time next fall.
A stacked offensive line group might lead to Simpson being redshirted in 2018, a route that has worked out for both of Oklahoma’s current offensive tackles. Offensive tackle is one of the hardest positions to adjust to going from high school to the D1 level, so having a year to familiarize himself with OU’s system and improve physically could end up paying dividends for Simpson down the road.
