Class of 2018 cornerback Miguel Edwards has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Oklahoma Sooners. The three-star Floridian also received offers to play for Alabama, Auburn and Miami, among many others. Edwards is ranked as the 41st cornerback in the nation, but his upside has garnered the attention of several blue-blood programs.
How He Fits In
At 6’0” and 164 pounds, Miguel Edwards may be long and lanky on film, but he has big-play capability. Edwards has a nose for the football, forcing several turnovers on defense and outright blowing plays up on special teams. With the ball in his hands, Edwards shows off his long stride as a runner. If the ball-hawking defensive back ever gets his hands on a ball with the Sooners, stay tuned for some fireworks, folks.
In high school, Edwards spent much of his time on the field lined up as a safety, so he’ll be experienced at other positions should the Sooners need him to fill a void in the future. Now, whether he was playing safety or not, Edwards frequently displayed example after example of why size doesn’t mean everything when it comes to laying the wood. As Edwards develops under OU’s strength program, look for even bigger hits to follow in his future.
This past season saw a ton of movement in the Sooners’ secondary. Injuries plagued many of the defensive backs throughout the season, along with a benching or two and a half game suspension. True freshmen like Robert Barnes, Tre Norwood and Tre Brown benefitted greatly from the early playing time, and Miguel Edwards now has many older guys to learn from as soon as he arrives on campus.
