Oklahoma Sooners football: Baker Mayfield apologizes for his actions during Kansas game

Baker Mayfield tweeted out this apology shortly following the conclusion of Saturday’s 41-3 win over Kansas.

It takes a big man to admit when he messed up, and that’s exactly what Baker did here. He didn’t try to make excuses even though he had a right to be upset after the Kansas captains refused to shake his hand and Hasan Defense tried to decapitate him well after the play was over. Baker’s actions on the field were not great, but I personally think the entire situation was completely overblown, particularly by Greg McElroy and Dave Pasch who spent almost the entire second half skewering Mayfield as if he’d just committed murder.

Hopefully Mayfield’s quick apology means that the team can move on from this and prepare for West Virginia next week. He opted to get out ahead of this situation by posting this tonight rather than waiting until the Monday press conference. Baker will no doubt get his fair share of criticism from talking heads this week, but that is certainly not a new experience for him.
