This is NOT a "Feel-Good" Essay.

First and foremost, let me throw out a great big THANK YOU to Baker Mayfield and Rodney Anderson, Marquise Brown, and Mykel Jones for playing above expectations… (all except you Baker…. I thank you for…. well, just being Baker.)

If you wanted to read all the good news… You just did above… the rest is painful.

FUN FACTS FOR US SOONER FANS

Seven games into the 2017 season, our Sooners have played exactly 2 teams with winning records (Ohio State and Iowa State) and won one and lost one. Of the other 5 games we've won, two teams HAVE YET TO WIN EVEN A SINGLE GAME and the overall record of these 5 teams is 9-26.

Along that same note….. the combined records of the teams still to come on our schedule is 23-12. (65.71% winning percentage) Compare this to the records of the 7 teams we have already played… 20-29 (40.81% winning percentage) If we are struggling this hard to win against teams who have only a 40% winning average, what's going to happen when we play 5 teams who have a 65% winning average?

Baylor, Iowa St., and Kansas St. ALL had more total yards against OU than their season avg. Baylor, Iowa St. and Kansas St. ALL scored more points against OU than their season average. Keep in mind, their season average INCLUDES 3 NON-CONFERENCE GAMES EACH against teams like Northern Iowa, Akron, Central Arkansas, Charlotte, liberty, UTSA, and Duke.

Last but not least…. In our last 4 games, the winner wasn't decided until LATE in the 4th quarter…. and all were by one touchdown or less. The combined records of these 4 teams is 11-17.

It took 7 games but now the reason for the problems the Sooners have this season are Glaringly Evident. THIS SOONER TEAM PLAYS DOWN TO THE COMPETITION. Every week but two this entire season.

Let's Review.

UTEP: 0-7… Hard to play this far down…. but… Arizona beat UTEP worse then we did.

tOSU: 6-1 … We were in a position to score FIVE TIMES in the 1st half and came away with 3 points. They weren't scoring so we didn't either. Worse thing about this win was it showed what we are capable of and also demonstrates HOW FAR BELOW those capabilities we are actually playing

TULANE: 3-4 … The other exception…along with UTEP. Even our Sooners can't play down to the likes of UTEP and Tulane… ALTHOUGH we tried damn hard to do so out of the gate in both games.

And now the true Sooners show their cards….

BAYLOR: 0-7 …We struggle and fight for a win against 0-7 Baylor. How bad was this? OU allowed Baylor to score more points than every other team they have played….EXCPT LIBERTY. Liberty allowed 45… OU held them to a miserly 41. Perspective…. the 41 points allowed was DOUBLE what any team, other than Liberty, and WVU allowed…. DOUBLE!!!

IOWA ST: 4-2 … Best example of what happens when you PLAY DOWN to the competition and something goes wrong in the end…. We played at their level and couldn't get the breaks we needed to eek out the win.

TEXAS: 3-4 … 3rd best example of what happens when you PLAY DOWN to the competition. We got lucky and won in the final minutes of the game.

KU: 3-4 … 2nd best example of what happens when you PLAY DOWN to the competition. If not for a great run by Anderson with :04 seconds left in the game, this game would have been decided by a 40+ yard field goal by our kicker who hasn't hit from 40 yards out since 2015!!!

OUGRADIAM made the comment to me yesterday…."Sometimes you eat the bear… and sometimes the bear eats you!" I'm afraid the bears are now in line like they were at a Golden Corral Buffet, Ketchup and A1 at the ready to feast on the Sooners over the next 5 weeks.

I'm not even going to talk about Mike Stoops and the Defense…. There isn't anything else to add.

OVERHEARD ON THE SIDELINE DURING SATURDAY'S GAME……

Lincoln Riley says….. "Let’s see…. 3 time heisman contender….. All American….. Unquestionably the best QB in College Football…… Highest efficiency rating in the history of the game….. completes 75% of his passes…… Undisputed Leader of the team…..

I’ve got an idea!!!!! Time is running out, We have to make something happen….. let’s Pull this guy, Mayfield, out of the game and put in his back-up to run on 3rd and 18…. Yeh…. that should work…..

.....and while we’re at it, we’ll take the ball out of his hands down near the goal line because He’s scored WAY too many touchdowns in his career so he probably doesn’t have another one in him."

I'm just sick…. It's seasons like this that make me wish I was a Rhode Island Crab Claw Fan. (or whatever the hell Rhode Island's mascot is)

BOOMER SOONER!
