I’m not even going to write about last week. Bad loss, stuff happens. We’ve all hopefully said all we could possibly say by now about that damn bizarre afternoon in Norman. So, I’ve put a stamp on it and finally moved on (I think).

And so, we’ve finally arrived at game day for the rivalry of all rivalries in college football — the Oklahoma Sooners versus the Texas Longhorns in the 112th edition of the Red River Showdown/Shootout/Rivalry! It’s been quite a week of #HateTexas fun. We’ve brought you all the usual lead-up to the game, including among other things my conversation with none other than Superman, himself, the iconic legend of the Red River Rivalry, Mr. Roy Williams (!). I was thrilled to have the chance to run with the interview on this of all weeks. If you haven’t already had the chance to catch up on what Roy’s up to these days, you can read the entire Q&A here.

So, we all remember last year’s shootout, which resulted in a 45-40 Oklahoma victory after the Sooners were upset by a 1-4 Texas squad in 2015. With this year featuring, once again, No. 12 OU with more to lose heading into the ball game against an unranked Texas team, but as we all know, this matchup requires one to “throw the records out” as they say. The slate is swiped clean like any other year for the next writer to pen his very own result, on the very same field as any other year, the very same colors that shine so brightly on the field and in the stands.

I expect a competitive game, but I honestly can’t see Lincoln Riley, Baker Mayfield, Obo and company not bouncing back strong after last week’s upset. I don’t even want to go down another line of thinking. It’d be too much right now.

While we don’t quite know what to expect from this Texas team and its freshman quarterback playing in his first Oklahoma game — a fellow Austin native of the more experienced play caller on the other side for the Sooners — we do, however, know the Longhorns’ run defense is stout and the squad will be ready to compete. They have athletes at the skill positions and should come out with energy and fervor, with Punchable Face Tom Herman leading the way. Although Texas will show up with swagger in a game of this magnitude, will Oklahoma get its swagger back and play like the more talented team this afternoon?

The only answer I will go with, for the sake of sanity, is ‘yes’. A shaky start and a back-and-forth first quarter should give way to the Sooners taking command in the second half. I’d advise you to prepare for a roller coaster, though, for this is OU-Texas, and this is where the unpredictable lives.

As I was typing this, defending champion Clemson went down on Friday the 13th at Syracuse, and Wazoo is in heat against Cal in Berkeley. So, maybe, just maybe, the Sooners started off a domino effect of bizarre upsets, and OU gets back on track, back to business tomorrow in Dallas. Let all the other dominoes fall where they may...the rest of the season is a long play.

But then again, what do I know? OU 35, Texas 29.

Be safe in Dallas, Sooner Nation!
