We’re 28 days away from the start of the 2016 season, and today we honor a trio of Sooners who wore that number.
The first player that comes to mind needs no introduction, but he’ll get one anyway. A.D. - NOT AP! - is the best player I’ve seen on Owen Field and probably the best football player I’ve ever seen in person. I’ll never forget jumping off of my grandmother’s couch in Duncan and screaming about a teenager putting on a hat during the 2004 Army All-American Bowl. The Sooner State was abuzz about this kid from East-Central Texas, and he never once disappointed us.
Our next player put on the the greatest show I’ve ever witnessed on Sept. 20 of 2003 against the UCLA Bruins. Antonio Perkins was very solid corner for the Sooners, but he was an absolute star on special teams. He took three punts to the house that day, setting an FBS record that still stands today.
Our final player had as much heart as any player that has worn an OU uniform, and it’s still on display up in Detroit. Travis Lewis was a four-year starter at linebacker who racked up 451 takes and nine interceptions from 2008-2011. He was the heart of the defense throughout his career, and I’ll never forget when he ran out onto the field in Tallahassee after being ruled out.
