Heading into the final week of the regular season, Baker Mayfield started for the Oklahoma Sooners despite suffering from concussion like symptoms the week before. With the information in hand, the coaching staff turned to the running backs. Delivering a stellar performance against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road, the duo of Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon proved the Sooners were capable of winning by running the ball consistently. The effort from the back field produced a 58-23 in Stillwater while locking up a ninth Big XII Championship.
Of the 524 yards gained, 344 of them came on the ground. Perine may have rushed for 131 yards and two scores but it was the freshman, Mixon, edging him out with a total of 136 yards on the ground along with two scores of his own. The charge by the backs produced a third consecutive win over a ranked for eventually pushing the Sooners into the College Football Playoff.
