Oklahoma Sooners Football Countdown to Kickoff | 41 Days!

Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

On September 5, 2015 the Sooner fans caught a glimpse of what they had in Baker Mayfield and in the new look Sooners offense as they soundly defeated the Akron Zips by a score of 41-3.

Mayfield set a record for most passing yards in a season opener with 388 yards while tossing 3 touchdown passes. Mayfield also added another on the ground.

Joe Mixon showed up and showed out amassing 142 yards from scrimmage, including a 76 yard touchdown pass. Eleven different Sooners caught a pass.

This was the first game calling plays for Sooner offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley. While the rushing stats were not great, it was more of an offensive line issue. All in all the Sooner totaled 539 yards. This game was the start of an incredible season which saw the Sooners in the college football playoff and valued the team back into the national spotlight where it currently sits.
