Blake Bell was able to take advantage of Trevor Knight's knee injury and etch his name in the Oklahoma football record books. Bell led the Sooners to a 51-20 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on September 14, 2013. In the win, Bell threw four touchdown passes and was 27/37 passing with 413 yards. It was the most passing yards ever by an Oklahoma quarterback making his first start.
Sterling Shepard was on the receiving end for eight of Bell's passes, collecting a then career-high 123 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Saunders and Roy Finch also hauled in touchdown passes from Bell on the afternoon and Jaz Reynolds joined Shepard in eclipsing the 100-yard receiving mark with 109 yards on just four catches.
Bell's first touchdown pass of the game didn't come until the second quarter when he connected with Shepard from three yards out. The next three times that Oklahoma would cross the goal line after that were on passes from Bell.
