During the recruiting process, Joe Mixon receive much praise for the abilities displayed on the gridiron. However, the freshman's career nearly ended before it even started. Receiving a suspension from team activities due to an incident that occurred on Campus Corner, many wondered if Mixon would ever step onto the field in an Oklahoma Sooners jersey.
After a year of waiting, fans finally played witness to the running back's career debut against Akron. Flashing what could be, Mixon carried the ball five times for 27 yards while Samaje Perine continued to carry the load. Yet, it may have been the redshirt freshman's versatility that dazzled the crowd the most.
Finding an open field behind the Akron defense, Mixon ran into the end zone on a 76-yard reception. The play marked the longest reception by a freshman in school history. Needless to say, the expectations placed on this kid's shoulders continue to grow.
