In 2008, Jermaine Gresham set the bar high for any future Oklahoma Sooners tight end. However, after an injury - and later his departure to the NFL - the usage of tight ends seemingly ceased to exist. Was it due to a lack of talent at the position? Maybe it was because the game of football continued to evolve? Or could it have been a simple stubbornness from the offensive coordinator?
Regardless of how you slice it, the refusal to use a tight end in the redzone baffled me.Then, Mark Andrews stepped on to the field causing a resurgence.
In 2015, the redshirt freshman caught a total of 19 passes. Along side those 19 receptions, Andrews racked up 319 yards including seven touchdowns. The effort earned AP First Team All-Big XII Honors while the league coaches placed Andrews on the Second Team.
The future continues to look bright for No. 81!
