On Tuesday night, two freshmen starred for the Oklahoma Sooners against ORU Golden Eagles. Taking the mound, right hand pitcher, Dylan Grove excelled at the task handed to him. Throwing six scoreless innings, the Oklahoma City product paved the wave setting up an eventual 12-3 victory.
Pete Hughes is no stranger to playing youngster on the D-1 I level. Over the course of the season, the head coach has continuosly leaned on the young group. Tuesday was no different as a total of six freshmen earned starting roles while the team played a ten. One of those happened to be catcher Domenic DeRenzo.
The Sooners backed up their pitcher on the offensive side of the equation plating four runs in the first. A leader and major player on this squad, Sheldon Neuse knocked in three runs through the first two innings. Then at the top of the third, DeRenzo teed off on a pitch sending it over the wall for a solo shot. However, the freshman wasn't done.
In the next inning, DeRenzo found himself at the plate once again, this time with the bases loaded. Clearly in a bit of a rhythm, the catcher drilled another homerun. The effort nettted DeRenzo a sixth homerun over the span of six games.
The win snaps a four game losing streak against the Golden Eagles and brings the Sooners record to 22-22-1.
