Nine was the magic number for Louisiana-Lafayette over the weekend as that was the exact number of runs the Ragin Cajuns posted in each of their three games in the course of their Lafayette Regional sweep, the later of which was a 9-8 win over Texas A&M in a game that lasted nine innings on Sunday evening.
The other victims of the Cajuns over the weekend were Boston University (9-5) and the Texas Longhorns (9-1). In all Louisiana-Lafayette racked up their 27 weekend runs off of an eye popping 38 hits. They'll look to challenge Oklahoma's Paige Parker who held the Sooners' three weekend opponents to a combined total of just three runs, including a shutout against Ole Miss in the regional championship.
"We never play perfect softball." ULL head coach Michael Lotief said after Sunday's regional championship. "But this team has the right mindset and they have pure hearts. Today, the ball bounced our way and we're thankful to our fans, our University and our community for their support."
Making their fifth consecutive trip to a Super Regional the Cajuns have a lineup that features six players with 40-plus RBI, on the season, and six players with double digits in home runs. They aren't just all bat though, pitcher Alex Stewart has posted a 1.52 ERA on the season and has a 27-4 record. She had a streak of 36 consecutive scoreless innings from March 19-April 9.
The first game between the Sooners and Cajuns will be Thursday evening at 8:00 and will be televised on ESPN2.
