Entering Saturday, Buddy Hield remained 31 points shy of sole possession of third on the Oklahoma Sooners all-time scoring list behind Tim McCalister. However, the senior guard also sat just 36 points away from snatching second from Jeff Webster on the same list.
Adding to his 2,245 point total, the senior guard tacked on 17 points behind 5-of-6 shooting from behind the arc in the first half against the Oregon Ducks in the Elite Eight. Finding a similar level of success to open the second half, Hield poured in another 8 points bringing his total to 26 for the game with 15:52 remaining in regulation.
Then a cold spell sunk in for Hield as well as the rest of squad. Despite the drought, a foul thirty feet from the basket send the Big XII Player of the Year to the charity stripe where he picked up points number 29 and 30 effectively tying McCalister's career output.
From that point, all it took was a single player failing to fight over a screen giving Hield the room he needed beyond the three point line. Elevating, the shot fell but Hield wasn't done as he set his sights on Webster. Connecting on the front end of two free throws, Hield gained possession of second on the all-time scoring list.
Although Oklahoma is advancing to the Final Four, the will not be an opportunity to dethrone Wayman Tisdale.
