You ever get your dream job? That one job where it doesn't feel like work at all. The job look forward to each and every day. That is the job that I believe Calvin Thibodeaux now has at OU. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe that he didn't work hard and put forth a huge effort at Kansas and Tulsa, but now I believe he is the kind of coach that will sell OU like it hasn't been sold in a long time.
In today's world of recruiting, I don't believe tradition and program prestige is what is important. Neither do I believe that a high school recruit really cares about a coaches previous positions. While in some cases I would guess that a school like Texas or Baylor could use the relative inexperience of Thibodeaux, but I don't think it will be the deciding factor in all but a few cases.
Here's the other thing in recruiting, you can either do it or you can't. Lincoln Riley had relatively no experience and was coming from East Carolina, yet I would say that his recruiting abilities speak for themselves. In fact I would say that Riley is the Sooners closer when it comes to a recruit.
So will Thibodeaux be able to recruit? I would be cautiously optimistic. When you have your dream job and you are selling recruits to come be a part of the Sooners program, I think the chances are pretty good that you will be successful.
As far as who I would watch in the class of 2017 that Thibodeaux will be recruiting?
5-Star DL Marvin Wilson 6-4/320 from Houston, TX
4-Star DL Greg Rogers 6-4/295 from Las Vegas, NV
3-Star DL Deiontae Watts 6-3/300 from Plano, TX
DE/OLB Earnest Brown 6-5/230 from Denton, TX
DE/OLB Isaiah Thomas 6-5/230 from Tulsa, OK
DE Trevor Kent 6-4/255 from Pittsburg, KS (No OU Offer Yet)
I fully expect more names to pop up over the next few weeks and months.
