Oklahoma Sooners Football: Joe Mixon Will Play, Samaje Perine a ‘Maybe’ Against Baylor

OU’s backfield will hopefully be close to full strength this weekend

Bob Stoops told reporters this morning that Joe Mixon will be back for this weekend’s game. He also said Samaje Perine will potentially be back this week, as well.

OU was able to get by without the best backfield duo in the country last week, but they will both be needed this week. Although wounded and demoralized, Baylor still have a very potent passing attack that is more than capable of lighting up OU’s secondary. If Baylor starts to have some success, there may be portions of the game in which OU’s chances of survival will depend on their ability to counterpunch. Having a workhorse like Perine and a human highlight reel like Mixon will obviously make things easier.

If Perine is still out this week (which is still a possibility), will OU hand off a bit of the load to Dimitri Flowers. I know they’d like to put him back in his lead-blocking role, but if Mixon needs a breather and Adams is ineffective, we could see some carries for Flowers. However, since Perine is practicing this week, I don’t see him missing this game. Let’s hope he doesn’t re-aggravate that muscle!
