According to Scott Roussell at FootballScoop.com, Oklahoma’s young offensive coordinator is a candidate for the newly-vacant head coaching position at Oregon. According to the report, Oregon has spoken with representatives of Riley as well those of Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck.
Based on who Riley is up against, I think Sooner fans can rest easy. Fleck, 36, has led Western Michigan to an undefeated record in his fourth season. He’s taken the Broncos to three consecutive bowl games after going 1-11 in his first season. It appears that Fleck is going to be Oregon’s first option (especially amongst the fans), so Riley will be in Norman for at least a little bit longer. Other positions will be opening in the coming weeks and months (possibly SMU?), and Riley’s name will be brought up for most of them. I’m a big fan of Lincoln Riley, so I hope he sticks around while he waits for the right fit instead of jumping at the first opportunity. He’ll definitely be a head coach in the future. But for now, let’s just hope Oregon decides to #RowTheBoat.
