Oklahoma Sooners Football: Week 9 College Football Viewing Guide (Plus Gambling Picks)

Will the Sooners cover this week against the Jayhawks?

NCAA Football: Oklahoma at Texas Tech Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

Well, Sooner fans, we witnessed a disastrous defensive performance last weekend that managed to tarnish both the image of OU’s football team and the conference as a whole. The Big 12’s reputation coming into that game wasn’t great for a number of reasons, but that game made everything much, much worse.

Luckily, we get to move on from it this week by seeing the Sooners face a much less formidable offense. We’ll still have plenty to complain about, so come join us on the game thread (comments section below) during the game this saturday to vent your frustrations.

Last week, I was 2-3-1 against the spread. Since the Bama-A&M spread was 19 at the time of the post and the score ended at 33-14, I ended up with a rare push there. On another negative note, I went 2-4 on the O/U bets. Let’s hope for a better week this time around!

Kansas at Oklahoma (-40.5) - Facing an offense with a slower pace should be a nice confidence booster for our guys on defense. Let’s just hope it isn’t a confidence booster for the Stoops brothers. The Tech performance needs to loom over the coaches until the issues are truly fixed. Gambling pick: That’s an awfully big line, and Kansas is more competitive this year (at least lately). I have the Jayhawks beating the spread by a very narrow margin, as I envision OU winning by about 35 or 38 in this one. Over 68.

West Virginia (-3.5) at Oklahoma State - West Virginia’s pass rush is formidable, and OSU’s offensive line allowed five sacks vs. Kansas last week. Mason Rudolph may be in for a rough day. Gambling pick: I’ve got the Mountaineers covering, and I think they’ll win by about 10. Under 65.

Washington (-10) at Utah - I don’t think Utah’s defense is going to match up well at all against Washington. But fear not, WVU and Baylor fans - Washington has a decent chance to lose in Pullman (11/25) or in the Pac 12 Championship Game in a likely matchup against Colorado. Gambling pick: The Huskies cover in SLC. Over 52.

Baylor (-3.5) at Texas - As we saw two weeks ago in Norman, K-State’s offensive style has a was of masking certain secondary issues. Texas gave up 171 yards passing last week, but they’ll probably give up around 500 this week. Adios, Charle Strong! Gambling pick: This line almost seems too good to be true, but Baylor is still an easy call here. Over 71.

Florida (-8) vs. Georgia (in Jacksonville) - The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is near the top of my college football bucket list, along with tailgating on a yacht at Washington (I checked off the Tennessee River last year) and going to The Grove for an Ole Miss game. As far as the actual game is concerned, I’ll take the team that didn’t lose to Vanderbilt at home. Gambling pick: Florida covers by a couple of points. Over 44. On a side note, I was looking for the line on this game and realized I was looking for the Florida/Georgia line. I hate Florida Georgia Line, so I’m never picking this game again.

Nebraska at Wisconsin (-9) - This marks the beginning of what will be a rough two-week stretch for the Huskers. I’m sure their fans will enjoy a trip to the Outback Bowl (I’m serious. The Tampa/St. Pete area is pretty fun). Gambling pick: Nebraska beats the spread due to the nature of football games involving Wisconsin, but the Badgers come away with a W. Under 43.

Clemson (-4) at Florida State - Clemson has won only once in Tallanasty (2006) since 1989. In typical FSU fashion, I see Clemson jumping out to an early lead before FSU inevitably storms back. Gambling pick: FSU covers and wins this one, but Clemson will likely win out the rest of the way and make the playoff. Over 61.
