Oklahoma Sooners Football Media Day Quick Hits | Perine Injured/Riley Wants One Quarterback

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Saturday was the annual "Meet the Sooners Day" put on by the Oklahoma football team where fans get the opportunity to mingle with the players, seek autographs, and pose for photos. Afterwards, the coaching staff had a media session to provide the first updates since practice started. Here's a few nuggets from the media session.

  • Running back Joe Mixon was notably absent from the session with the fans. It's certainly an understandable move by the coaching staff to hold him out but it begs the question as to what point Mixon will be able to fully participate in all of the team activities.
  • We do know that Mixon is participating in practices though. Bob Stoops even mentioned that he had been sharing time returning punts.
  • Stoops also said that running back Samaje Perine had suffered a minor knee injury during Saturday morning's practice and would be shelved for a few days. It doesn't look like it's anything to be overly concerned about at this time though.
  • Mike Stoops mentioned that the Sooners weren't very deep in the secondary but Bob talked about how well the freshmen were coming along and then discussed the improvement of Ahmad Thomas and Hatari Byrd from last season.
  • Along the defensive line, Bob Stoops mentioned Charles Walker saying that he's "pleased" with the strides the redshirt sophomore is making. He added that, athletically, he's as good as anyone they've coached at OU. Dwayne Orso and Matt Romar also got a mention along the defensive line.
  • Apparently Frank Shannon still looks good. Coach Stoops mentioned that he was moving well and his "experience" was noticeable.
  • As far as the big story of fall camp goes, Stoops said that Baker Mayfield shoulder is fine and that he's no longer under any restrictions. Lincoln Riley did say that all of the quarterbacks were on a count as to how many passes they can throw at practices.
  • Stoops said that sophomore quarterback Cody Thomas has made improvement and is, "way ahead" of where he was in the spring.
  • Bob Stoops said the sooner they're able to settle at quarterback the better but that they won't force it.
  • Riley was asked about playing two quarterbacks and he said that wasn't the plan. Rather he wanted to go with one guy because he didn't believe in playing two guys just to do it.

  • As far as using the running backs in Riley's new offense, he said that they will touch the ball more than anyone and that the backs would be tired come Saturday night/Sunday morning.
