On December 2, 2006 Oklahoma played Nebraska in Kansas City for the conference championship. In a game that featured two defensive minded teams it was the Sooners who were able to capitalize on mistakes, take advantage of offensive mismatches and prove to be the victors by a final score of 21-7.
Paul Thompson completed 19-35 passes, with one pick, for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He also conducted one of the most famous drives in OU football history when he took the Sooners 99 yards in the third quarter for the game's final touchdowns. Both of Thompson's touchdown passes were thrown to Malcolm Kelly who caught 10 balls for a total of 142 yards.
Three Sooner defenders nabbed interceptions in the game and three others recorded sacks. Linebacker Zach Latimer led the team with seven tackles and had three pass breakups.
