Following the 1938 season head coach Tom Stidham led the Sooners to a berth in the Orange Bowl, thus marking the first time that OU made a postseason appearance. While Oklahoma eventually fell to Tennessee by a final score of 17-0 the moment would mark the beginning of what would become a Sooner Football tradition...playing in a bowl game.
Oklahoma has appeared in a total of 48 bowl games which ranks them seventh nationally among FBS schools and they have won 28 of their bowl games which ranks third among the FBS.
The Sooners have played in the Orange Bowl more than any other bowl game, making a total of 18 appearances. Oklahoma's longest bowl losing streak came from the 2007 - 2009 seasons when they lost three times. On three different occasions (1954-59, 1972-76, 1979-81) the Sooners have won four consecutive bowl games which marks their longest winning streak in the post season.
Oklahoma is one of only two programs to have played in all five BCS bowl games.
