OU Softball : Sooners Clinch Fourth Straight Big 12 Championship With Win

Rich DeCray

Last year, the Sooners softball team became the first Big 12 team in history to win three conference titles in a row. With a win against Kansas on Sunday, they clinched their fourth Big 12 championship in a row. They won the series against the Jayhawks 2-1, after a four run inning in the sixth on Sunday pushed them to a win.

The victory put them six games ahead of second place Baylor with only four conference games remaining for Baylor and two for the Sooners. Even if  everything were to fall into place for a tie, then Oklahoma would still hold the tie-breaker due to them winning the season series between the two in Norman. Baylor has two series left in Big 12 play against Texas and Kansas. If they can win out and the Sooners lose their last two games in conference play, then Baylor will have earned a share of the Big 12 title.

This is head coach Patty Gasso's ninth conference title in her 21st season as the Sooners head coach. Gasso has made it to at least the WCWS in each of her last four seasons, winning the 2013 national title. The fifth ranked Sooners hope to win another one this year after getting eliminated in the WCWS last year.

The Sooners will play Utah Valley twice next weekend and face off against the Cowboys in an in-state rivalry game in Stillwater the weekend after that. Oklahoma defeated the Cowgirls 7-1 earlier in the season.
